Series Info  Â
*Friday's game between the Falcons and Huskies will be the 18th all-time meeting. Bowling Green leads the series 10-7.
*This will be just the fourth meeting in the last 10 seasons, and first since 2011.
*Bowling Green has lost three straight in the series, with the Falcons' last win coming in 2003. Dave Clawson is 0-1 against the Huskies in his career.
THE COACHING STAFF
*Head coach Dave Clawson is in his fifth season at the helm of the football team with a career record of 89-80, which includes a 31-31 mark at BGSU. He is 23-17 in Mid-American Conference games.
*For the fifth consecutive year the Falcons will have all three coordinators returning. Warren Ruggiero, Mike Elko and Adam Scheier will coach offense, defense and special teams.
*BGSU is the only program in the MAC that can boast having the same head coach and coordinators for five years running.
THE REBUILD IS COMPLETE
*Following a trip to the Humanitarian Bowl in 2009, BGSU Head Coach Dave Clawson knew he had an arduous rebuilding job ahead of him. The Falcons slumped to 2-10 in 2010 but have rebounded by winning three more games than the previous season in each of the past two years. The Falcons are one of just four FBS teams to have made a three-win increase or better in each of the past two seasons and the only one of those teams that has improved again in 2013.
THE CAPTAINS
*BGSU Head Coach Dave Clawson has named eight captains for the 2013 season -- Alex Bayer, Jairus Campbell, Dominic Flewellyn, BooBoo Gates, Ronnie Goble, Chief Kekuewa, Gabe Martin and Paul Swan.
*The group represents three players on the offensive side of the ball (Bayer, Flewellyn and Kekuewa) and five on defense (Campbell, Gates, Goble, Martin and Swan).
*Three of this year's captains were also captains a year ago -- Flewellyn, Goble and Swan.
DIVING INTO 9-3 AND 7-1
*In finishing the regular season with a 9-3 record, Bowling Green improved over the previous season for the third consecutive year.
*The win at Buffalo marked the ninth regular season win for the Falcons, the first time the program has reached that mark since winning 10 games in 2003.
*Bowling Green has won nine games for the first time in a season since 2004, when the team finished the regular season at 8-3 before winning the GMAC Bowl.
*BGSU was crowned MAC East Champs with their win over Buffalo. It is the first outright division championship since 2003, when the Falcons won the MAC West Division.
WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN
*A win on Friday would make the Falcons 10-3, marking the program's first double-digit win total since 2003.
*A win would give Bowling Green their first Mid-American Conference Championship since 1992.
*A Falcon win would be the first for the program over a ranked team this season.
BREAKING DOWN THE MAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
*Bowling Green will meet Northern Illinois for the first time since 2011. NIU has won three straight contests in the series, dating back to 2003.
*Friday's appearance in the MAC Championship game is just the program's second all-time appearance in a MAC Championship game. The last appearance came in 2003, when the Falcons hosted Miami in the last non-neutral site championship game.
*Bowling Green has not defeated Northern Illinois since College Gameday visited campus on October 25, 2003. That matchup featured two ranked teams, with the Falcons defeating No. 12 NIU 34-18 that day.
BREAKING THE #MACTION MOLD
*When fans hear the phrase #MACtion, most think of the offensive fireworks by Mid-American Conference schools featured in weeknight games on national television. But Bowling Green has broken that mold with a stifling defense as well as an explosive offense.
*The Falcons returned nine starters in 2013 from a defense that ranked sixth in the country in total defense in 2012, allowing just 296 yards per game.
*Through the regular season, the Falcons lead the MAC in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, passing defense, pass defense efficiency, first down defense, and red zone defense .
NEWS AND NOTES FROM BUFFALO
*Shaun Joplin caught six passes for a career-high 149 yards on Friday. He also caught his third touchdown pass of the season in the game.
*Travis Greene had 129 rushing yards on Friday, the eighth time this season he has surpassed that century mark. The eight 100-yard games are the most by a Falcon since Dave Preston had eight in 1974.
*Greene's 30 carries in the game were a career high, surpassing his previous high of 24 rushing attempts earlier in the season.
*The 260 rushing yards by the Falcons were the fifth most in the Dave Clawson era.
*Buffalo's seven points were the fewest they have scored in a game this season.
*The 9-3 record marks the first time that BGSU has won nine games since 2004.
*Bowling Green will make their first appearance in the MAC Championship game since 2003.
*Matt Johnson now has 2,802 yards on the season, eighth most in school history for a single season.
A DOMINANT STRETCH
*Bowling Green has been dominant over the past four games, allowing just one touchdown while outscoring the opposition 176-17.
*During the past 18 quarters of play, the Falcons have outscored opponents 194-24.
TEAM DEFENSE LEADS WAY TO MAC EAST TITLE
*During the past two weeks, the defense has shined to lead the Falcons to a MAC East Division title. At EMU two weeks ago, the Falcons allowed just four passing yards. Then, at Buffalo, BGSU held the Bulls to a season-low 15 rushing yards and seven points.
17 POINTS IN LAST FOUR GAMES
*BGSU allowed just 17 points over the last four regular season games, and just one touchdown.
*During that stretch, no team has scored in the second half.
FALCONS DOMINATE SECOND HALF
*BGSU has not allowed a second-half point during the last four games.
*In fact, the Falcons have allowed just seven second-half points during the last six games.
*Dating all the way back to the final eight regular season games, Bowling Green has allowed just 21 second-half points, only 14 of which came with the first-team defense on the field.
BEST DEFENSE IN MAC SHINES AGAIN
*Bowling Green's defense was dominant in a 24-7 win to clinch the MAC East at Buffalo last week, allowing the Bulls to rush for just 15 yards.
*Branden Oliver, Buffalo's leading rusher, had just 46 yards in the game, 123 below his MAC average.
*The Falcons held Buffalo to just seven points. The Bulls, coming into the game, had scored 30-or-more points in eight straight games. The seven points were the fewest scored by Buffalo this season.
RED HOT IN THE RED ZONE
*In its nine wins, Bowling Green has been 39-of-44 scoring on trips in the red zone. • Defensively, Bowling Green ranks first in the country, allowing just 15 scores in 26 red zone trips. Of the 11 stops, four have come by virtue of missed field goals, three by recovered fumbles and four by fourth-down stops.
*UMass, Miami, and EMU did not reach the red zone when the Falcons played them.
AN EXPERIENCED CREW
*At the beginning of the season, Bowling Green knew they had a veteran team. Returning nine starters on defense and eight more on offense, it was the second straight year the Falcons returned 17 starters..
*12 Falcons have started all 12 games this season, including the whole offensive line.
*Alex Bayer, Jacob Bennett, Logan Dietz, Dominic Flewellyn, Aaron Foster, BooBoo Gates, Alex Huettel, Shaun Joplin, Chief Kekuewa, Bryan Thomas, Cam Truss, and Ryland Ward have started all 12 contests to date.
*There are also 16 Falcons on the current roster who have started at least 20 games in their career.
MAC LEADERS
*BGSU leads the MAC in 15 different team statistical categories.
*Offensively, Bowling Green leads the MAC in third down conversion percentage, fewest fumbles lost, yards per completion, time of possession, and fewest turnovers lost.
*On the defensive side of the ball, BGSU leads the MAC in first downs defense, passing defense, red zone defense, rushing defense, scoring defense, team passing efficiency defense, and total defense.
*The Falcons are inside the top 10 of FBS football in several statistical categories including fourth down defense, first downs defense, fumbles lost, fumbles recovered, passing yards allowed, punt return defense, punt returns, red zone defense, scoring defense, team passing efficiency defense, time of possession, total defense, and turnovers lost.
BGSU ONE WIN FROM MAC TITLE
*While Bowling Green has won 10 MAC Championships in its program history, it has never won a MAC Championship game.
*The Falcons have played in just one MAC Championship game, hosting Miami and Ben Roethlisberger in 2003.
*The Falcons have not won a MAC Championship since 1992.
FALCONS TAKE OVER FORD FIELD
*Friday's MAC Championship game will be the second time that Bowling Green has played a game at Ford Field, home of the NFL's Detroit Lions.
*The first game came on December 26, 2003, when the Falcons defeated Northwestern 28-24 in the Motor City Bowl.
BACK-TO-BACK IN NFL STADIUMS
*Friday's game against Northern Illinois will be the first time under Dave Clawson that Bowling Green has played consecutive games in NFL stadiums.
*The MAC Championship game will mark the fourth current NFL Stadium that the Falcons have played in under Clawson, and the fifth NFL Stadium overall.
*BGSU traveled to Temple in 2010, playing at Lincoln Financial Field (Eagles), losing 28-27. In 2012, the Falcons defeated UMass (Gillette Stadium - Patriots) 24-0. In the Military Bowl last season, the Falcons played SJSU in RFK Stadium (former home of Redskins). Then, last week, Bowling Green defeated Buffalo 24-7 at Ralph Wilson Stadium (Bills).
HOME SWEET HOME
*The 2013 season marked the first time that Bowling Green has won at least five home games since 2004, when they went 5-0.
*BGSU completed its first three-game homestand since 2004 earlier this year, matching that season's 3-0 mark during the stretch.
*Since 1956 -- the first year with Doyt Perry as head coach -- BGSU has played 15 three-game homestands and a four-game homestand in 1960 (going 3-1).
*The Falcons went 3-0 in seven of the 15 homestands, 2-0-1 in another, 2-1 three times and 1-2 in the other four.
THE ROAD ISN'T BAD, EITHER
*For the first time since 2009, Bowling Green completed a perfect MAC road schedule with a win over Buffalo.
*It is just the third undefeated road ledger in the MAC during the past 10 years. Besides 2009, the only other time the Falcons have been perfect on the road in the MAC in the last 10 seasons was 2005.
GREENE MEANS GO
*A converted wide receiver, Travis Greene has put together arguably the best season from a running back in school history. With 1,422 yards, Greene currently ranks second all-time for rushing yards in a single season. He is just 22 yards shy of tying the record, set by Fred Durig in 1951, a record which has stood for 62 seasons.
*Greene has gone over 100 yards in eight contests this season, which ties the school record. The only other two running backs to have eight 100-yard performances in a single season were Dave Preston (1974) and Fred Durig (1951).
*The redshirt sophomore currently sits fourth all-time for all-purpose yards in a single season with 1,544. He is just 59 all-purpose yards away from moving into second all-time.
THE SIGNAL CALLER
*Redshirt sophomore Matt Johnson was inserted into the season-opener against Tulsa at quarterback to start the Falcons' third possession of the game and guided the Falcons to the 34-7 victory.
*Since the time he was inserted into the starting lineup, he has earned three MAC East Offensive Player of the Week awards (weeks two, four and seven).
*Johnson got the first start of his career against Kent State, going 19-for-25 for 357 yards and two touchdown passes, earning MAC East Offensive Player of the Week honors. He was one of eight Manning Award Stars of the Week.
*In the win over Murray State, Johnson was 19-of-22 passing. His .864 completion percentage was the fifth-best single-game percentage in BGSU history. He again earned MAC East Offensive Player of the Week honors.
*The redshirt sophomore currently sits at 2,802 yards on the season, eighth most in school-history. He is just 149 yards shy of seventh on the all-time list.
*Johnson found his groove in the second half of the Buffalo game, passing for a touchdown and running for another. He had what was arguably the most important play of the game, when he kept the ball on a designed handoff and ran 56 yards into Buffalo territory. It was the longest run of the season for the Falcons.
HOUSTON, THEY'VE GOT A PROBLEM
*Walk-on freshman William Houston made a splash in his first collegiate game, scoring three times from just a yard out against Tulsa.
*For his efforts, Houston was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week.
*Houston entered last Saturday's game against EMU with 10 touchdowns and 79 yards on the season. In that game, he rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown. The TD came from 44 yards out. In his previous 10 touchdown rushes, he had gained a combined 12 yards.
*The true freshman has 11 touchdowns on the season, which is fourth in the Mid-American Conference.
DYNAMIC DUO OF RUNNING BACKS
*With running backs Travis Greene and William Houston, the Falcons have a pair of backs that have rushed for double-digit touchdowns this season. The last time BGSU had a pair of players with double-digit rushing touchdowns was in 2003, the last time the Falcons appeared in the MAC Championship game.
JOPLIN HAS ICE IN HIS VEINS
*Despite struggling in the first half on Friday at Buffalo, Shaun Joplin was able to shake it off and come up with a huge second half.
*The fifth-year senior had just one catch for 10 yards in the first half, but exploded for five catches, 139 yards and a touchdown in the second half. His 149 receiving yards were a career high.
*With a couple first half drops and a 7-3 deficit at half, head coach Dave Clawson showed faith in the senior, going to him early and often in the second half.
*On the very first drive of the second half, quarterback Matt Johnson found Joplin down field for a 31-yard gain on 3rd & 10.
*The very next drive, Johnson found Joplin in the corner of the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown to give the Falcons the lead for good at 10-7.
*Leading 17-7 in the fourth quarter, the Falcons faced a 3rd & 9 from their own 31-yard line. Johnson would throw one up to Joplin down the sideline. Joplin would outjump the defender, step past another, and run 62 yards to the Buffalo 7. It was the longest reception of his career, and set up a touchdown to seal the game on the very next play.
WE WANT MOORE
*True freshman Ronnie Moore has added a facet to the offense missing in 2012 -- explosive speed and play-making ability.
*Moore has been responsible for eight plays of 30 or more yards this season, the most on the team.
*The native of Sanford, Fla. currently leads the team with six touchdown receptions. He became the first Falcon since Sept. 10, 2011 to catch three TDs in a game.
*His performance at Eastern Michigan earned him MAC Offensive Player of the Week. He had seven catches, 161 yards, and three TDs, while also rushing the ball two times.
*Moore has scored touchdowns this year from 74, 51, and 34 yards out, all of those coming on passes which he used his speed to beat the defense to the end zone.
TATE IS GREAT
*Tyler Tate has been consistent in 2013, something the Falcons have been missing from their kicking the past few years.
*He is 14-of-17 this season on field goals, and 51-of-52 on PAT attempts.
*In the 58-7 win against Eastern Michigan, Tate recorded a career-high 16 points while converting all 10 of his kicks. His three field goals were a career-high, while his seven PATs matched his career high from the previous week.
PACING
*Through 12 games, several players are on pace to etch their names in the BGSU single-season record book. Among the most notable are:
*Traivs Greene currently sits in second all-time for a single season with 1,422 rushing yards. He is just 22 yards shy of Fred Durig's mark set in 1951.
*Greene is also on pace for 1,542 all-purpose yards, which would put him fourth all-time. He is also averaging 6.1 yards per carry, which would be sixth-best all-time for a single season.
*Matt Johnson is completing passes at a 63.2 percent clip, which would be the eighth best mark for a single season.
*The redshirt sophomore quarterback is averaging 14.3 yards per completion, which would be fourth-best in school history for a single season.
*Johnson currently sits in eighth with 2,802 yards passing in 2013. He is 149 yards shy of Brian McClure's mark set in 1984.
ON T.O.P. OF THEIR GAME
*BGSU leads the MAC in time of possession, possessing the ball for 34:16 per game. That is the best mark in all of FBS football.
*Bowling Green is 9-1 this season when they win the time of possession battle, and 0-2 when they lose it.
SPECIAL TEAMS DOMINANCE
*BGSU's special teams have provided key sparks for the Falcons all season long.
*BGSU kicker Tyler Tate is 14-of-17 on field goal attempts and 51-of-52 on extra points.
*Ryan Burbrink had a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown against Tulsa.
*Cameron Truss stuffed a fake punt on fourth-and-1 against Tulsa.
*BGSU recovered a muffed punt in the fourth quarter against Tulsa.
*In his only two punt attempts at Mississippi State, Schmiedebusch recorded 48 and 49-yarders. More impressively, one was downed at the one-yard line and the other, following a penalty, forced MSU to start at its own six.
*In the contest against Ohio, Bowling Green stuffed another fake punt attempt early in the contest to swing the momentum in favor of the Falcons.
*The Falcon kicking game has been consistent for the majority of the 2013 season. Tyler Tate has made seven PATs in back-to-back games.
*Paul Senn blocked a punt against Indiana and returned the ball for a 56-yard touchdown, earning the No. 1 play on SportsCenter's Top 10 for Saturday, Sept. 14.
*Greg Hohenstein recovered a muffed punt in the win at Buffalo.
FIRST TIME STARTERS
*Three Falcons earned their first career starts against Tulsa -- all on the offensive side of the ball. Offensive tackles Logan Dietz and Jacob Bennett, along with running back Travis Greene, had their names in the starting lineup for the first time.
*Quarterback Matt Johnson picked up his first career start in the win over Kent State.
*Ronnie Moore and Brian Sutton picked up their first career starts at Indiana.
*Justin Ford posted his first career start against Murray State.
*Two more players got their first career starts against Mississippi State -- Chris Pohlman and William Houston.
*Redshirt junior Jared Cohen picked up his first career start against Toledo.
*Heath Jackson started at receiver against Miami, his first career start.
GETTING THEIR CAREERS STARTED
*In the season opener, 16 Falcons stepped on the field wearing the Bowling Green uniform for the first time in their collegiate careers.
*Four true freshmen saw action including Fred Coppet, Isaiah Gourdine, William Houston and Ronnie Moore.
*Nine of the first timers were redshirt freshmen in JJ Beggan, Jacob Bennett, Terrance Bush, Scott Davis, Logan Dietz, Greg Hohenstein, James Knapke, Izaah Lunsford and Ben Steward.
*Others who saw action for the first time were redshirt junior Jared Cohen (junior college transfer), redshirt sophomore Diontre Delk and junior Paul Senn (junior college transfer).
*Alphonso Mack and Jahlil-Nashid Croley both saw their first collegiate action in the win over Murray State.
*Against Ohio, Zac Bartman and Patrick Brown saw their first career action. Brown, celebrating Senior Day, kneeled down the final snap of the game.
THE CHIEF OF THE O-LINE
*David "Chief" Kekuewa spent two years at Arizona Western Junior College before coming to Bowling Green just prior to the 2012 season. Kekuewa has started every game over the past two seasons at center.
*Chief's last name comes from Keli'ikuewa (which is also his middle name) and means the wandering chief. In old Hawaii, Kekuewa's family were chiefs of Honaunau, the city of refuge, on the island of Hawaii. Once foreigners went to the islands and especially after the Great Mahele chiefs in the Hawaiian Kingdom lost land and power, his family became wanderers, hence the wandering chiefs.
ALL-MAC RETURNERS
*BGSU returns seven players who were named All-MAC a year ago. Gabe Martin and BooBoo Gates were first team all-league honorees, while punter Brian Schmiedebusch made the second team. Alex Bayer, Dominic Flewellyn, Ted Ouellet and Cameron Truss were named to the third team.
*In all, the Falcons had 10 All-MAC players a year ago, the most for the team since 2004.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
*BGSU has earned 11 Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week honors through the first 11 games of the season.
*Travis Greene was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 142 yards and adding 71 more yards receiving in a 31-14 win over Akron. Greene also had a rushing touchdown and a receiving score.
*Matt Johnson earned three MAC East Offensive Player of the Week awards for his efforts against Kent State, Murray State and Mississippi State.
*Paul Senn earned MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week after blocking a punt and returning it for a touchdown against Indiana. He also recovered a fumble on a kick-off after the Falcons took a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.
*William Houston was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three touchdowns in his first collegiate game against Tulsa.
*Ryan Burbrink was named MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week after a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown against Tulsa.
*Tyler Tate was named MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance at Miami which he converted all six PATs and made a field goal.
*Brian Schmiedebusch was named MAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts against Ohio, when he punted four times and held Ohio to -4 yards on returns.
*Ronnie Moore was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week this past week against EMU, when he had career-highs in catches (7), yards (161), and touchdowns (3). He was the first Falcon since Sept. 10, 2011 with three receiving touchdowns in a single game.
ALL ALONE
Senior BooBoo Gates has two kick returns for touchdowns, one punt return for a score, two interception returns for TD, and a fumble recovery returned for a TD in his career. Gates is the first Falcon in school history to own touchdown returns via kick, punt, interception, and fumble returns.
VERY SPECIAL TEAMS
Since head coach Dave Clawson arrived at Bowling Green, he and assistant coach Adam Scheier have found a way to get the most out of the BGSU special teams. In five years, Scheier's special teams have:
*three kick returns for touchdowns.
*four punt returns for scores.
*blocked 15 kicks.
*returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.
*converted on two fake punts.
*produced two All-MAC returners (BooBoo Gates and Eugene Cooper).
*produced two All-MAC punters (Brian Wright and Brian Schmiedebusch twice).
ON THE TUBE
BGSU has had nine games aired on the ESPN Family of Networks, with Friday's game being the 10th. Friday's Marathon MAC Championship game will be aired on ESPN2. Games against Tulsa and Indiana were televised on ESPNU and the Kent State game was aired on ESPN Regional. The Murray State, Akron and UMass games were broadcast on ESPN3 as was the game against Toledo. The Nov. 5 contest at Miami was an ESPNU telecast. The game Nov. 12 vs. Ohio was on ESPN3, as was the game at EMU. Last week's game at Buffalo was televised on ESPNU. On top of that, the game at Mississippi State was televised on Fox Sports Net.
FALCONS IN THE NFL
*Three former Falcons are currently playing on NFL rosters. Kory Lichtensteiger, Shaun Suisham, and Chris Jones are all representing the Falcons in the NFL.
*Jones has played in eight games for the Patriots, starting the last six. He has 40 tackles and five sacks.
*Suisham is in his fourth season with the Steelers. He is 24-of-26 on field goals this season and 25-of-25 on PATs.
*Lichtensteiger is in his fourth season playing offensive line for the Redskins. He has started all 11 games this season and all 27 over the past two seasons.
DEFENSE STYMIES HIGH-POWERED OFFENSES
In each of the last three games, BGSU has held their opponent to a season-low in points. The Falcons shut out Ohio (49-0) before holding Eastern Michigan to just seven points. Last week at Buffalo, the BGSU defense held Buffalo's offense to seven points, their season low. UB had scored 30-plus points in eight consecutive games before Friday's game. To hold Northern Illinois' high-powered offense to their season low, the Falcons will need to keep the Huskies under 27 points, their season low in a win at Akron.
NATIONALLY-RANKED FALCON DEFENSE
The Bowling Green defense currently ranks fifth in the country in scoring defense and seventh in total defense. The Orange and Brown allow opponents to score just 13.8 points per game this season while allowing just 296.6 yards per game. Bowling Green trails just Florida State, Alabama, Louisville, and Michigan State in scoring defense. In total defense, BGSU trails Michigan State, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Alabama, and Wisconsin.
