Holmes Tabbed the Madness Mid-American Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
December 16, 2013 | Men's Basketball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University's Richaun Holmes continued his torrid pace over the Falcons two games last week and for his efforts he was tabbed the Madness Mid-American Men's Basketball Player of the Week by College Sports Madness (www.collegesportsmadness.com).
Holmes was dominant on both ends of the floor for the Falcons last week, as the junior helped guide Bowling Green to a 2-0 week, including its first road win of the season.
Holmes registered back-to-back career-highs in blocked shots last week, posting seven in both a home win over North Dakota and a road win at Morehead State. His seven blocks tied the school record for the most blocks in a single game and is the most by a BGSU player in a single game since Scott Vandermeer totaled seven versus Ohio back on Feb. 7, 2005.
In the win over North Dakota, Holmes recorded his first career double-double with a game-high 21 points, a career-high 14 rebounds and a career-high four assists. He shot 70 percent (7-of-10) from the field overall and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the charity stripe in the win.
The forward had yet another huge second half on Sunday afternoon in the road win over Morehead State, as he totaled 17 points, five rebounds and two steals to go along with his seven blocked shots for the game. Holmes scored the last nine points over the final four minutes of the contest for BGSU to help seal the 67-61 road win over the Eagles.
The road win was the first non-conference road win for BGSU since a 61-53 win at FIU on Dec. 22, 2011 and is the first overall road win for the Falcons since last year, a 57-41 road win at Northern Illinois on Feb. 6, 2013.
On the week, Holmes averaged 19 points, on 55 percent shooting from the floor and 78.9 percent shooting from the free throw line, 9.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 7.0 blocks per outing.
In the second half alone of the two contests combined, Holmes averaged 17 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.5 blocks and shot over 64 percent (9-of-14) from the field and 79 percent (15-of-19) from the free throw line.
He now has 35 blocks on the year, an average of 3.5 per contest, and climbed into the top-five of the BGSU career record books with 108 career rejections. Over his last four games, Holmes has totaled 24 blocked shots, an average of 6.0 per game.
