Bayer Selected To Play In East-West Shrine Game
December 17, 2013 | Football
Bowling Green State University tight end Alex Bayer has accepted an invitation to play in the East-West Shrine Game on Saturday, Jan. 14. The 89th Shrine Game will feature top collegiate players from around the country. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. at Tropicana Field. Bayer will be the first Falcon since Freddie Barnes to participate in the game. Barnes played on the East team in the 2010 East-West Shrine Game.
Bayer, who is a captain for the Falcons, is second on the team with 34 catches for 536 yards and three touchdowns. Bayer set a career high in the MAC Championship Game with seven receptions for 124 yards and a score. A native of Pickerington, Ohio, Bayer was named All-MAC at tight end for the second consecutive season in 2013. Bayer has also been integral in the run and pass games, as he has blocked in front of Travis Greene, who set the school record with 1,555 yards on the ground in 2013. Quarterback Matt Johnson has also passed for 3,195 yards this year.
The East-West Shrine Game is the longest running college all-star game in the country. The game has consistently been a launch pad for collegiate players, as over 100 players in last year's game signed with professional teams in 2013. Returning to direct the East squad will be former Atlanta Falcons and Houston Oiler head coach Jerry Glanville. Taking the reins for the West's top signal caller will be Romeo Crennel, a former head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cleveland Browns.
