Falcons headline first team with six players honored
Phil Steele, one of the most respected college football writers in the country, has named 13 Bowling Green State University football players to his postseason All-MAC teams. As the 2013 Mid-American Conference champions, BGSU led the first team with six players honored by Steele. Four Falcons earned second team All-MAC, while three more were placed on the third team.
Representing the Falcons on the first team were running back Travis Greene, tight end Alex Bayer, offensive lineman Dominic Flewellyn, defensive lineman Ted Ouellet, linebacker DJ Lynch, and safety BooBoo Gates. Greene has 1,555 rushing yards on the season and 13 total touchdowns. He is the school's all-time leading rusher and also owns the school record with nine 100-yard rushing games this season. Bayer, who was just selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game, had a career-high seven catches for 124 yards in the MAC Championship Game. Flewellyn, a two-year captain, has anchored an offensive line which has rushed for over 2,500 yards and passed for over 3,000. Ouellet leads the team in sacks and is one of the most disruptive lineman in the MAC. Lynch leads the team in tackles and tackles for loss, while Gates is a two-time All-MAC first-teamer and is the only player in school history to score a touchdown via interception, fumble, kickoff, and punt returns.
Center Chief Kekuewa, right guard Alex Huettel, linebacker Gabe Martin, and punt returner Ryan Burbrink were named second team All-MAC by Steele, while wide receiver Shaun Joplin, defensive lineman Bryan Thomas, and quarterback Matt Johnson were placed on the third team.
The Falcons will head to Detroit for the Little Caesars PIzza Bowl on December 26, when they take on Pittsburgh inside Ford Field. BGSU, looking for their school-record-tying 11th win of the season, will look to knock off a BCS team for the first time since 2008, when they beat Pittsburgh at Heinz Field. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. on ESPN.
