MAC East Division champs well represented on all-MAC teams in 2013
CLEVELAND, Ohio—Ten Bowling Green State University football players were named all-conference on Wednesday morning, the Mid-American Conference announced. It is the second consecutive season that the Falcons have had 10 players named to the all-MAC postseason teams.
Offensively, David "Chief" Kekuewa (first team), Dominic Flewellyn (first team), Travis Greene (second team), Alex Huettel (second team), and Alex Bayer (third team) were named to the all-MAC team. On the defensive side of the ball, Jerry "BooBoo" Gates (first team), D.J. Lynch (second team), Ted Ouellet (second team) and Gabe Martin (second team) were honored. Ryan Burbrink (second team) was honored as a punt return specialist on special teams.
BGSU was third in the MAC behind Ball State (15) and Toledo (11). Northern Illinois also had 10 players named to the all-MAC teams.
Kekuewa, a senior captain from Keaau, Haw., has anchored an offensive line which has led one of the top offensive units in the Mid-American Conference. The center, Kekuewa is in his second season with the Falcons having started all 25 games since arriving on campus. The Falcons have seen a huge increase in the rushing game in each of his two seasons. BGSU has averaged 180.4 rushing yards per game during his two seasons, but is averaging 209.7 yards per game rushing this season.
Flewellyn, a senior captain from Maple Heights, Ohio, has started 45 consecutive games from his spot at left guard. He has been an integral part of the rushing attack that averages over 200 yards per game. As a captain last season, Flewellyn was named to the all-MAC third team. The Falcons' offense has passed for over 3,000 yards this season while rushing for more than 2,500.
Greene, a redshirt sophomore from Carol City, Fla., has put together one of the best seasons out of a running back in Bowling Green State University history. A converted wide receiver, Greene has rushed for 1,422 yards, just 22 shy of the school-record of 1,444 set by Fred Durig in 1951.
Huettel, a redshirt sophomore from Pickerington, Ohio, has started all 25 games the past two seasons. A right guard, Huettel has solidified the interior of the line playing besides two other all-MAC offensive lineman. Huettel has been an anchor of the offensive unit which averages over 460 yards per game.
Bayer, a redshirt senior from Pickerington, Ohio, was named an all-MAC third teamer for the second consecutive season. A captain, he has started all 12 games this season, and 36 consecutive. The tight end has caught 27 passes this season, tied for second most on the team. He is averaging 15.3 yards per reception and has two touchdowns on the season.
Gates, a senior captain from Middletown, Ohio, has been named first team all-MAC for the second straight year. A strong safety, Gates has 57 tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries on the season. He is the first player in school history to score touchdowns via interception, fumble, kickoff and punt returns.
Lynch, a redshirt junior from Pontiac, Mich., leads the team with 67 tackles. He also leads a balanced defensive unit with 6.5 tackles for a loss. Lynch and the Falcons are seventh in the country in total defense and fifth in FBS football in scoring defense.
Ouellet, who was named third team all-MAC a season ago, is a redshirt senior from Sherborn, Mass. Ouellet has 24 tackles on the season with 6.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. The defensive tackle had two sacks and three tackles for loss at Buffalo, as the Falcons clinched the MAC East Division.
Martin, a redshirt junior from Grand Blanc, Mich. is a captain and was the starting rover during the first half of the season, before suffering a season-ending injury during the Toledo game. A first team selection last season, Martin had 36 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks before his injury.
Burbrink, a redshirt sophomore from Shady Side, Mary., has averaged 8.6 yards per punt return for the top punt return unit in the MAC. Burbrink has returned just 12 punts for 103 yards on the season. He is the only punt returner in the MAC to have a punt return for a touchdown this season, an explosive 67-yard return in the season opener against Tulsa.
The Falcons, who finished the regular season at 9-3 overall and 7-1 in the MAC, were crowned East Division champs last Friday after beating Buffalo 24-7. They will make their first appearance in the Marathon MAC Championship Game, on Friday, December 6, since 2003. BGSU takes on No. 14 and undefeated Northern Illinois in the game contested at Ford Field on ESPN2 at 8:00 pm.
