QUICK HITS
• For the Falcons, Wednesday's game begins the first of five-straight intra-divisional contests to end the regular season ... BGSU faces the Zips Wednesday, and after a Saturday (Feb. 23) game at Miami, the Falcons close the home portion of the regular-season schedule with games vs. Buffalo (Feb. 28) and Ohio (March 3).
• Something's got to give when the Zips come to town on Wednesday ... Akron ranks 11th in the entire nation in scoring offense, averaging 75.7 points per game ... UA is 27th in the country in field-goal percentage, 25th in three-point field goals made per game and 57th in three-point FG pct. ... the Falcons are 26th in the nation in scoring defense, though, allowing only 53.5 ppg ... BGSU is 48th in the country in three-point FG defense.
• The Falcons are coming off a 60-49 win at Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16) ... BGSU scored on seven-straight possessions in the early going, hitting five consecutive three-point tries to begin the game ... the Falcons went 8-of-15 from long distance in the opening half and made 10 treys on the day.
• A pair of seniors and Carmel, Ind., natives led the way for the Falcons at NIU ... Chrissy Steffen and Danielle Havel scored 14 points apiece in the win, combining to make seven of BG's 10 three-pointers.
• Steffen made a season-high four treys vs. the Huskies ... she has hit 15 three-pointers over her last five games, and has moved into a tied for seventh place on the BGSU career list for three-point FG made.
• Havel's total of 14 points tied her career high, and she set a new career standard for three-pointers made ... Havel also had 14 points in the Falcons' win at UNLV earlier this season, before matching that total against NIU ... she was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range vs. the Huskies on Saturday.
• The Falcons hold a commanding 48-3 lead in the all-time series with Akron, but the Zips captured this season's first meeting ... UA picked up a 68-63 win at Rhodes Arena on the last day of January ... Akron has never won in Bowling Green, as the Falcons are a perfect 25-0 in home games vs. the Zips, including 1-0 at the Stroh.
• Through 24 games this season, the Falcons have held the opponent to fewer than 50 points on 10 occasions, setting a 'modern-day' record ... the school record is 12 such games, amassed by the 1973-74 team ... the '74-75 club kept 11 opponents under the 50-point mark ... the 2006-07 BG team held nine opponents to fewer than 50 points, en route to an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen.
• Akron is the lone MAC team to score over 60 points vs. the Falcons this season to date ... the Zips, as mentioned, scored 68 in the teams' first meeting ... BGSU has held MAC foes to fewer than 50 points six times in the first 11 league games.
• In 28 games at the Stroh Center, the Falcons have allowed the opponent to reach 70 points just twice ... no MAC team has scored more than 59 points vs. the Brown and Orange in 13 games vs. conference foes in the building ... BG has allowed an average of 53.3 ppg in all games at the Stroh, and just 51.3 ppg in MAC games.
• At the offensive end, the 60-point mark has been a pretty good barometer in determining BGSU's success this season ... the Falcons have a record of 16-1 when scoring 60 or more points this year ... BG is 0-7 when the offense is held under the 60-point plateau.
• Steffen is in the top-20 on the BGSU career scoring list ... she now has 1,135 career points at BG ... Steffen moved past Stefanie Wenzel (1,099 points from 2000-04) in the Buffalo game ... her next target is 19th-place Andrea Nordmann, who scored 1,164 points at BGSU from 1989-93.
• After connecting on four three-point field goals at NIU, Steffen now has made 168 in her career ... that total ties her for seventh in BGSU history ... Steffen has matched Kim Griech's total (168 from 1999-2003), and she is just five successful three-pointers away from fourth place.
• Northern Illinois held a 34-30 rebounding advantage on Saturday ... the Huskies became just the third team in the last 18 games, and only the fifth this season, to outrebound the Falcons.
• The 2012-13 Falcons have displayed impressive balance during the conference portion of the schedule ... this balance is evident in a glance at the MAC-only statistics ... only two players are averaging more than eight points per game in league games (Steffen and redshirt junior Alexis Rogers, at 10.7 and 10.1 ppg, respectively), but six BG players are averaging at least 6.4 ppg ... and, each of the other five Falcons who have seen action this season have scored between 3.0 and 3.8 ppg in conference play.
• The Falcons' conference opponents have averaged just 50.5 points per game over the first 11 league games.
• All 11 Falcons who have seen action this season have scored in double figures at least once ... nine of those 11 players have hit double digits more than once ... and, no fewer than 10 different players have led BGSU in scoring in at least one game this season.
FALCONS VS. THE MAC
The Falcons, entering the Akron game, continue to own the best record in MAC history ... BGSU has an all-time record of 369-151 (.710) in MAC regular-season contests, for the most wins and highest winning pct. of all league institutions ... and, BGSU leads the series with all 11 MAC foes, making the Falcons the only team in the league, obviously, with a winning series record against every other school ... BG also has the most overall wins (708) and highest overall winning percentage (.648) of any conference women's basketball-playing institution.
