SENIOR DAY
Sunday marks 'Senior Day' for the BGSU women's basketball program, as the Falcons' four seniors will be recognized in ceremonies prior to tipoff between BG and Ohio ... that senior class consists of Simone Eli, Danielle Havel, Allison Papenfuss and Chrissy Steffen.
SENIOR DAY/NIGHT SUCCESS
BGSU is looking to continue a lengthy streak of success on Sunday ... the Falcons have won 11 consecutive 'Senior Day/Night' games since Jennifer Roos came to BGSU, and BG is 16-1 in the last 17 such contests ... the lone loss in that time came to Miami in February of 2001.
THE FALCONS AND THE MAC TOURNAMENT RACE
• If the regular season was over, the MAC Tournament seedings would look a little something like this ...
Seed | School | Record | Remaining Games |
1 | Toledo | 13-1 | v EMU, v Ball St |
2 | Ball State | 11-3 | v WMU, @Toledo |
3 | Central Mich. | 10-4 | @NIU, @EMU |
4 | Akron | 10-4 | v Miami, @Buffalo |
5 | Miami | 9-5 | @Akron, @Ohio |
6 | Bowling Green | 9-5 | v Ohio, @Kent State |
7 | Buffalo | 7-7 | v Kent State, v Akron |
8 | Eastern Mich. | 6-8 | @Toledo, v CMU |
9 | Western Mich. | 5-9 | @Ball St, v NIU |
10 | Northern Ill. | 2-12 | v CMU, @EMU |
11/12 | Ohio | 1-13 | @BGSU, v Miami |
11/12 | Kent State | 1-13 | @Buffalo, v BGSU |
• As it currently stands, the Falcons would be the tournament's sixth seed, and would host the number-11 seed, either Kent State or Ohio, in first-round action on Saturday, March 9.
• Under the MAC Tournament format instituted last season, the top-four seeds receive multiple byes ... the third and fourth seeds each earn a 'double-bye' and are placed into the third round ... seeds one and two earn a 'triple-bye' and will advance directly to the semifinals ... put another way, a team seeded first or second will need to win only two MAC Tournament games to capture the title, while the third or fourth seed would need three wins ... any team seeded fifth through 12th will need to reel off five consecutive wins to capture the tourney crown ... seeding is based on conference winning percentage, regardless of division.
• BGSU could finish as high as the second seed and as low as the seventh ... to finish second, the Falcons would need to win both remaining games (vs. Ohio and at Kent State on Wednesday), and the Falcons would need Ball State to lose twice, Akron to lose twice and Central Michigan and Miami to lose once each.
• To finish as the fourth seed, the Falcons need to win both remaining games, and BG needs two of the following things to happen:
- Akron to defeat Miami ^
- Central Michigan to lose at least one of the remaining two games
- Ball State to lose both remaining games
^ or, if Miami defeats Akron, both MU and UA would need to lose their final game
• In the event of a two-team tie, BG would win a tiebreaker with Ball State, Central Michigan and Buffalo ... the Falcons would lose a two-team tiebreaker with Akron (by virtue of the Zips' better record within the East Division) and Miami ... the MAC tiebreaker procedure can be found on page 18 of the PDF version of these notes.
QUICK HITS
• The Falcons are coming off a 56-43 win over Buffalo on Thursday night (Feb. 28) at the Stroh Center ... all 10 players who saw action scored at least two points for the Brown and Orange, with no player scoring more than 12 ... junior Jillian Halfhill had 12 points, along with seven rebounds, a game-high four assists, three steals and two blocks.
• Senior Chrissy Steffen had her first double-double of the year, with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds ... for Steffen, the rebound total represented a season high, and the double-double was the third of her career ... her career rebounding high is 12, which came in last year's game vs. UB at the Stroh (Feb. 15, 2012).
• Junior Jill Stein had a well-rounded stat line, with eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and a game-high three blocked shots vs. the Bulls.
• With the win on Thursday, the Falcons have clinched a winning record in MAC play for the 10th consecutive year, a new school record.
• The Falcons allowed Buffalo to score just 43 points on Thursday night ... on the season, BGSU has held the opponent to fewer than 50 points on 11 occasions, setting a 'modern-day' record ... the school record is 12 such games, amassed by the 1973-74 team ... the '74-75 club kept 11 opponents under the 50-point mark ... the 2006-07 BG team held nine opponents to fewer than 50 points, en route to an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen.
• In 30 games at the Stroh Center, the Falcons have allowed the opponent to reach 70 points just twice ... Akron (61 points in a BG win on Feb. 20) is the only MAC foe to surpass the 60-point mark against the Brown and Orange in 15 games in the building ... BG has allowed an average of 53.2 ppg in all games at the Stroh, and just 51.4 ppg in MAC games.
• BGSU is ranked 35th in the nation in scoring defense this season, having allowed 54.2 points per game ... the Falcons also are among the country's top 50 teams in fewest personal fouls (27th; 13.6 per game) and fewest turnovers committed (44th; 14.4 per game) ... BG is 40th in the nation in three-point field goals made per game (6.7).

• The Falcons' 56 points on Thursday was BGSU's lowest total in a win this season ... BG's last win when scoring 56 points or fewer came in the 2011 MAC Tournament's championship game, a 51-46 triumph over Eastern Michigan at Quicken Loans Arena (March 12, 2011).
• The following few notes illustrate how successful BGSU has been over the last decade ... the Falcons are currently 9-5 in MAC play ... BG has not had more than five losses in conference action since the 2002-03 campaign.
• In fact, BGSU has 122 wins and just 20 losses in MAC games over the last eight-plus years ... no other conference school has fewer than 51 MAC losses in that time.
• The Falcons' 15-point loss to Miami last weekend (Feb. 23) was the team's largest margin of defeat this season ... believe it or not, it also was BGSU's most lopsided loss to a MAC team in over five years, since a 68-47 setback at Ball State on Jan. 26, 2008.
• Miami became the first team to defeat BGSU twice in the same season since Eastern Michigan in the 2004-05 campaign ... the Eagles won both regular-season meetings that year, but the Falcons gained a measure of revenge in the MAC Tournament, earning a 77-57 win in the semifinal round en route to the first of three consecutive conference tourney championships.
• Steffen has moved into the top 20 on the BGSU career scoring list ... she currently has 1,166 career points as a Falcon, ranking 19th ... Steffen moved past Andrea Nordmann (1,164 points from 1989-93) in the Buffalo game, and her next target is 18th-place Jacki Raterman, who scored 1,213 points at BGSU from 1995-99.
• Steffen is now fifth in school history in three-point field goals made, having hit 172 long-distance shots in her career ... Steffen is just one successful three-pointer behind fourth-place Sara Puthoff.
• The Falcons have a record of 10-4 at the Stroh Center this year to date ... BG has posted a double-digit home win total in each of the last eight seasons.
• The Falcons have a record of 17-2 when scoring 60 or more points this year ... after the win over Buffalo, BGSU is now 1-7 when the offense is held under the 60-point plateau.
• The Falcons' conference opponents have averaged just 52.5 points per game over the first 14 league contests.
• All 11 Falcons who have seen action this season have scored in double figures at least once ... nine of those 11 players have hit double digits more than once ... and, no fewer than 10 different players have led BGSU in scoring in at least one game this season.
A WINNING MAC RECORD – AGAIN
With Thursday's win over Buffalo, the Falcons have clinched a winning record in MAC play for the 10th consecutive year, a new school record ... BGSU posted winning league records in nine-straight years from 1985-86 through 1993-94 ... Fran Voll was the head coach for the first six years of that streak, with Jaci Clark at the helm for the latter three.
ABOUT THE FALCONS

• Fifth-year senior Danielle Havel has 7.3 ppg, and is near the top of the team lists in numerous categories ... Havel is second on the Falcons in both rebounds (5.6 rpg) and assists (2.0 apg), and she is also second on the team in blocked shots ... Havel has a BG-best four games with 10 or more rebounds this season to date ... she is shooting a team-best 46.3% from the field.

• Halfhill, Havel and Steffen each have started all 27 games this winter, while Rogers has made 26 starts ... Cairnduff started the first four games of the season, while Matthews was in the starting lineup for each of the next nine contests ... Justinger has been among the starting five for each of the Falcons' 14 MAC games.
• In MAC play, BGSU's scoring is quite balanced, as six players are averaging at least 5.7 points per game, but only two Falcons have more than 8.7 ppg ... • Head coach Jennifer Roos welcomed back nine letterwinners, including four starters, from a year ago ... the Brown and Orange went 24-7 overall and 14-2 in the MAC in 2011-12 ... two of those starters, Steffen and Rogers, were selected to the Preseason All-MAC Team in 2012-13.
