Softball Earns Split With Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University softball team (6-5) earned a split against Evansville Friday night, dropping the first game, 3-2, before rebounding with a 7-6 victory in game two.

Senior Hannah Fulk led the Falcons with three hits in game one, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore Jamie Kertes (1-3) picked up the loss, allowing three earned runs and striking out one in 3.1 innings of play. Fellow sophomore Paris Imholz finished the contest, allowing just three hits and striking out three in 2.2 innings.

The Falcons scored the first two runs of the game, coming in the top of the third on two hits. With two outs, Fulk recorded the first hit of the frame, belting a single to right field. A walk to senior Andrea Arney in the next at bat set up an RBI single from junior Katie Yoho, bringing home Fulk on a shot to right field. The Falcons then pulled off a double steal on the following play, bringing home Arney for a 2-0 Falcon lead.

The Purple Aces responded with a three-run bottom of the frame, crossing home plate three times on three hits in the third. Neither team was able to score again, giving Evansville the 3-2 win in game one.

The Falcons got the better of the Purple Aces in the second game of their doubleheader, defeating Evansville by a score of 7-6.

Senior Paige Berger led Bowling Green with three hits in the contest, adding a run scored and two RBI. Arney added a home run, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore Chloe Giordano led the Falcons with three RBI, going 1-for-4 with a home run.

Three pitchers saw action for the Falcons, including the first career start for freshman Braiden Dillow. Despite the start for Dillow, Imholz saw the majority of work, giving up three earned runs and striking out four in 6.1 innings. Kertes (2-3) finished the game, striking out two and allowing just one hit in the final 2.1 innings for the win.

The Falcons scored the first run of the contest, thanks to an RBI single from Berger for the early 1-0 lead. Evansville answered with two runs of its own, taking the lead on one hit and one error in the bottom of the first.

Bowling Green pulled even with a run in the top of the third, once again coming off an RBI single from Berger. Evansville responded with two-runs in the bottom of the frame, doubling up the Falcons, 4-2.

With two runners on in the top of the sixth, Giordano belted a three-run homer to give Bowling Green the 5-4 advantage, the Falcons' first lead of the game. Evansville tied the contest with one run in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth frame, Arney belted a two-run homer to give the Falcons a 7-5 lead. Evansville was able to score one run in the bottom of the inning, but was unable to pull even, giving Bowling Green the 7-6 victory.

“We are looking to find our consistency this weekend,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “The parts are there, we simply need to put them together.”

The Falcons are back in action Saturday, March 09, facing off against Southeast Missouri State in the first game of the Evansville Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. (EST).
