2012 Rutherford Team Champion: Bowling Green
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will look to defend its championship at the Rutherford Intercollegiate this weekend at State College, Pa. BGSU won this event in 2012 with a final score of 901 (303-297-301) on the Penn State Blue Course, the same location as the 2013 event.
The Falcons will return two players from last season's championship team. Helping the Falcons secure the win in 2012 were Charlie Olson (228, T-12th) and Wes Gates (231, T-21st). Joe Cooper competed as an individual last season, recording a 54-hole score of 240.
If the Falcons are to win the Rutherford Intercollegiate for a second consecutive season, they will have to do so in a stacked field of 14 teams. When play begins the Falcons will square off with Penn State, University of Maryland, Bowling Green, Seton Hall, Youngstown State, Rutgers, University of Minnesota, Binghamton, Robert Morris, Ohio University, Xavier, Georgetown, University of Connecticut, Villanova.
BGSU may be hitting its peak at the right time with the team coming off a second-place finish at the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational with a 54-hole score of 880 (290-291-299). Senior Wes Gates won his third tournament of the year, besting the field by three shots, compiling a score of 213 (67-71-75). Gates' nearest competition was teammate Joe Cooper, who finished second with a 216 (73-73-70).
This will be the final tune-up for the Orange and Brown prior to the MAC Championships, scheduled to begin on May 3-5.
