All six eligible student-athletes on 2012-13 roster earn league academic recognition
A trio of Bowling Green State University tennis standouts have been named to the 2013 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. Senior Maddy Eccleston and juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland were voted to the team, which was announced Thursday (May 16) by the league office.

BGSU led all schools with three student-athletes named to the first team and six women recognized overall. All six eligible players on the 2012-13 roster received academic all-conference recognition, as seniors Katie Grubb, Mary Hill and Jade Johnson earned honorable mention. Freshmen are not eligible for the award.
Eccleston was selected to the Academic All-MAC Team for the third consecutive season, while both Chiricosta and Reuland earned the honor for the second-straight year. The Academic All-MAC Team is the result of voting by the league's Faculty Athletics Representatives.
All three first-team selections have a cumulative grade-point average of better than 3.90, while each of the honorable-mention choices -- and everyone on the BGSU roster, for that matter -- has a GPA of 3.33 or higher.
Chiricosta, a native of Avon Lake, Ohio (Avon Lake HS), was named to the All-MAC Second Team last month. She led the Falcons in wins, finishing the 2012-13 season with an overall record of 51-23. Chiricosta went 26-9 in singles play and 25-14 in doubles, playing at the first and second singles flights and at the number-one doubles flight. She was named MAC Player of the Week twice and MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week once on the year. After just three seasons at BGSU, she already has a total of 149 career victories, tying her for fourth on that school list. Chiricosta is tied for fifth at the University with 77 career singles wins, and she has 72 doubles victories to rank 10th on that BG career chart.
In the classroom, Chiricosta is a communication major, and maintains a 3.967 cumulative grade-point average through the Spring 2013 semester.
Eccleston, a native of Toledo, Ohio (St. Ursula Acad.), finished her career as the winningest doubles player in BGSU history. She had a career doubles record of 97-38 (.719), and ended her BG tenure with 169 overall wins, the second-highest total in school history. Eccleston's total of 72 singles victories ties her for 13th on that school list. She was BGSU's female recipient of the Falcon Medal of Honor, the highest award given by the department, last month. A team co-captain for the second-straight year, Eccleston won 42 overall matches and had a 28-10 doubles mark this season. She teamed up with Grubb for a 6-2 record in MAC matches, and that duo went 2-0 during the MAC Championships.
Eccleston, a health science major, finished her undergraduate career with a cumulative GPA of 3.958.
Reuland, who hails from Oswego, Ill. (Rosary H.S.), had 45 total wins on the year, finishing third on the team in that category. Reuland went 25-14 in doubles, teaming with Chiricosta at the top doubles flight for nearly all of the dual-match season. The two juniors split time at the top-two singles flights in the spring. Reuland, named the MAC's Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Feb. 1, has a total of 134 career victories after three years at BGSU. She ranks 13th in school history in combined career wins, and is tied for 15th on the BG chart in singles victories, with 68. Her total of 66 doubles wins at the University ties her for 17th on that list.
Reuland, an exercise science major, has a 3.902 cumulative GPA through the spring semester.
BGSU, as mentioned, led the way with three Academic All-MAC Team selections. Akron and Northern Illinois each had two student-athletes voted to the team, while three other schools had one each.
Chiricosta, Eccleston and Reuland were joined by UA's Ksenia Berestetska and Prang Pantusart, Ball State's Courtney Wild, Buffalo's Tanvi Shah, the NIU duo of Haley Dekkinga and Nelle Youel, and Western Michigan's Nini Sujashvili. Eccleston and Pantusart both made the team for the third year in a row, while Chiricosta, Reuland and Sujashvili were named to the team for the second-straight May.
BGSU's total of six overall players selected (Academic All-MAC Team and honorable-mention selections combined) led all schools. UB and WMU each had four student-athletes named, while four schools had three selections and the remaining two MAC women's tennis teams had two apiece.
Grubb, a native of Elkhart, Ind. (Elkhart Memorial HS), had an overall record of 47-19 in her senior season, ranking second on the Falcons in total wins. She had a 26-7 doubles mark, leading the Brown and Orange with a .788 winning percentage in doubles matches. Grubb finished her career with a total of 132 victories, ranking 14th in school history. She tied for sixth all-time with 73 doubles wins at the University, and is ranked 22nd in school annals with 59 singles wins.
Grubb, a sport management major at BGSU, had a 3.572 cumulative GPA.
Hill, who hails from Munster, Ind. (Munster HS), was named to the MAC's All-Tournament Team as BGSU advanced to the championship match in 2013. A co-captain along with Eccleston, Hill's 38 overall wins on the season included a perfect 4-0 record in the league tournament. She had a 22-9 doubles mark on the year, and teamed with Johnson to go a stellar 7-1 at the third flight during MAC regular-season play. Hill, a transfer from Coastal Carolina Univ., had 131 total wins in three years with the Falcons. She ended her career tied for 15th in school history in overall wins. She tied for 11th on the BG doubles wins list, with 71, and finished 21st in singles victories, with 60.
In the classroom, Hill had a 3.337 cumulative GPA as a community health major.
Johnson, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind. (Homestead HS), won over 67 percent of her matches in 2012-13. Her overall record of 33-16 included a 27-8 doubles mark, as she finished second on the team in both doubles wins and doubles winning pct. (.771) in her final season. Johnson teamed with Hill for that 7-1 mark in MAC regular-season play and two more wins in as many tries in the MAC Championships. She finished her career with 102 overall wins, ranking 29th in school history. Johnson had a 71-37 career doubles slate as a Falcon, tying her for 11th on that BG chart.
Johnson, a biology major, had a cumulative GPA of 3.530 at BGSU.
To be nominated for the team, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 and must have competed in at least 50 percent of the athletic competitions for their sport in the current academic year. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible to be nominated.
The tennis Falcons concluded the 2012-13 season with an overall record of 17-5, setting a school record for wins. BGSU finished with a 5-3 MAC record, tying for second in the league's final regular-season standings, and the Falcons earned the number-two seed for the MAC Championships.
In the league tourney, the Brown and Orange defeated UA in the semifinals to advance to the championship match for the first time in program history, before dropping a narrow 4-3 decision to MU in the final. In addition to BGSU's overall win total, both the Falcons' regular-season and league tourney finishes were program bests.
