Florida native to attend BGSU in 2013-14
Harrell, a pitcher, is transferring to BGSU after spending the 2012-13 academic year at East Tennessee State University. She has three years of eligibility remaining.
"We are excited to add Sam to our softball family," said Salsburg. "After facing her last year there is no doubt she can make an immediate impact on our pitching staff and team."
As a freshman for the Buccaneers, Harrell pitched in 17 games, making 13 starts, and had a 5-8 record with five complete games and two shutouts. Harrell led the Bucs in opponent batting average (.264) and was second in strikeouts, fanning 43 batters in 72 1/3 innings.
A native of Okeechobee, Fla., Harrell was named the Class 7A Pitcher of the Year for the state of Florida as a senior. She finished that season with a school-record total of 229 strikeouts and an earned-run average of 1.06, leading Okeechobee H.S. to the state round of eight. In her four-year career, Harrell had a total of 709 strikeouts, also a school record, and an ERA of just 0.88.
Harrell was named to the all-conference team and was the league player of the year as a senior. A three-time scholar-athlete, she was named student council president as a senior.
While at ETSU this past spring, one of Harrell's wins was a complete-game three-hit shutout against BGSU, as the Falcons and Bucs split a doubleheader in Johnson City, Tenn.
Salsburg and the Falcons finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 27-24, and a Mid-American Conference mark of 9-13. BGSU tied for third in the East Division and advanced to the MAC Tournament.
