Falcon Baseball Summer Update
July 30, 2013 | Baseball
The 2013 season was a banner year for the Bowling Green State University baseball team, winning a MAC Tournament Championship and advancing to the Louisville Regional of the NCAA Tournament. But, the success hasn't stopped with the completion of the season on June 1, as it has continued throughout the summer. Not only have returning members of the 2013 championship team had success this summer, but numerous Falcons in professional baseball have represented the Orange and Brown well.
Â
The Falcons currently have two players on Major League Baseball rosters. Both drafted in 2005, Nolan Reimold was a second-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles while Burke Badenhop was a 19th-round pick of the Detroit Tigers.
Â
Reimold, who has been a member of the Orioles organization since signing in 2005, recently underwent season-ending surgery. The spinal-fusion procedure was to correct a similar operation which he had performed last season. Reimold was placed on the 60-day disabled list by the Baltimore Orioles, and will miss the rest of the 2013 season.
Â
Badenhop, who has been traded three different times during his career, is currently pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers. Despite their record of 44-61, Badenhop is once again proving that he is one of the most versatile and valuable middle-relief arms in the game. This season, the Perrysburg, Ohio native has amassed a 3.74 ERA in 47 appearances. Badenhop has appeared in the third most games for manager Ron Roenicke, while compiling the lowest ERA among relievers with over 45 appearances. Badenhop has struck out 33 batters in his 45.2 innings, with a WHIP (walks and hit per inning pitched) of 1.09. Among pitchers who have appeared in 47 games or more this season, Badenhop is in the top 15 for WHIP in all of Major League Baseball.
Â
Three other Falcons are enjoying successful season in the minor leagues. Jon Berti is currently playing with the Dunedin Blue Jays, the high-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. One of Berti's teammates at Bowling Green, Brennan Smith, is playing with the Lakeland Flying Tigers. The Flying Tigers are the high-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Both the Flying Tigers and Blue Jays are in the Florida State League. Ross Gerdeman, a 35th-round pick in 2011, is currently playing with the Hillsboro Hops of the Northwest League.
Â
Berti continues to impress during his second full season of professional baseball. Following a mid-year call-up to the D-Jays in 2012, Berti has anchored the lineup from the leadoff spot this season. In 98 games (5th most in FSL), Berti has scored 68 runs and stolen 45 bases, both best in the Florida State League. Berti, who plays every day for Dunedin, has amassed the most at-bats in the FSL (398) while recording 101 hits. Berti and the D-Jays will be in the playoffs for the second straight season, thanks to their first-half division title which saw them go 37-29 prior to the all-star break.
Â
Smith, who was called up to the Lakeland Flying Tigers a few days after the Falcons won the MAC Tournament, has compiled a 1-1 record in 11 games for Lakeland. Overall this season, Smith has a 3-2 record with a 4.30 ERA. He has struck out 41 batters in 44.0 innings pitched. Smith began the season with the West Michigan Whitecaps prior to his promotion at the end of May.
Â
Gerdeman has enjoyed success as a starter for the Hillsboro Hops of the Northwest League. The Hops are the short-season A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Gerdeman has started six games this summer for the Hops, pitching 39.2 innings in those games with an ERA of just 2.75. Due to lack of run support by the Hops offense this season, Gerdeman will take the mound tonight in search of his first win.
Â
Numerous current Falcons are also enjoying success this summer in their respective summer leagues. Five of the six teams that qualified for the playoffs in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League have Falcons on the roster.
Â
Jake Thomas, playing for the Danville Dans of the Prospect League, is currently fourth on the team with a .274 average. The Dans are currently 38-16, just two wins off the all-time Prospect League record. Danville has six games remaining in the regular season, and they are leading the race for the number one seed by three games. Thomas has 51 hits this summer, which leads the team. His 11 doubles are tops on the team, and fifth in the Prospect League.
Â
Andrew Kubuski is playing with the Strasburg Express this summer, a member of the Valley League. Kubuski is batting .263 and continues to play outstanding defense. Kubuski, who has become well-known in Bowling Green for tracking down every ball in the outfield, has not committed an error this season.
Â
Brian Bien and the Cincinnati Steam earned the No. 2 seed following a successful regular season in the GLSCL. Bien is third on the Steam in RBI and has stolen 13 bases this summer. The Cincinnati Steam will play the winner of the Licking County Settlers and the Grand Lake Mariners in the second round of the playoffs. The Settlers are represented by Matt Smith who is second in doubles and first in triples on the team. They earned the No. 3 seed for the playoffs. Smith will play a pair of teammates in the first-round game, as Devin Daugherty and Tyler Greiner will suit up for the Mariners. Greiner has finished the summer strong, while Daugherty has had a successful summer on the mound. On the other side of the bracket, a pair of Falcons will matchup in the 4 vs. 5 game. Ethan McKenney of the Lima Locos will play host to Jesse Rait of the Dayton Docs. The first round matchups will be played tonight (July 30).
Â
Three other Falcons who have hung up the cleats to pursue coaching careers are having successful summers. Recently retired Andy Tracy is in his second year developing minor league baseball players. Tracy is serving as the Minor League Hitting Coordinator for the Philadelphia Phillies organization this summer, after managing the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League a season ago. Roger McDowell, the pitching coach for the Atlanta Braves, has his pitching staff in line to run away with the National League East Division. McDowell's pitching staff boasts Major League Baseball's third-best ERA, at 3.36. The Braves currently lead the second-place Washington Nationals by nine games. On the American League side, former Falcon Jeff Jones is serving as the pitching staff under manager Jim Leyland for the Detroit Tigers. Jones's pitchers have an ERA of 3.74. The Tigers currently lead the American League Central Division by 2.5 games.
