Falcons Complete First Scrimmage
August 11, 2013 | Football
Bowling Green, Ohio - Aaron Foster returned an interception 78 yards for a touchdown and blocked as a field goal, while the Bowling Green offense posted four touchdowns and three field goals on 15 drives in the team's first scrimmage of the 2013 BGSU Football camp.
Quarterback James Knapke and wide receiver Gehrig Dieter, who will sit out the 2013 season after transferring from SMU, connected on a pair of 50+ yard receptions, the first being a 65-yarder that accounted for the first BGSU offensive touchdown of the game. On the next series, the two hooked up for a 51-yard reception and Knapke eventually found freshman Fred Coppet for a 12-yard touchdown.
Later in the scrimmage, senior quarterback Matt Schilz put together a touchdown scoring drive, hitting sophomore Jermal Hosley from six yards out. On the next possession, freshman Marcus Levy scored on a whirling 16-yard run.
The next three possessions were played situationally in the two-minute drill. On the first, Bryan Thomas sacked redshirt sophomore Matt Johnson on fourth down and Josh Pettus followed with an interception on the next possession. The third drive stalled as the defense held strong on fourth down from the two-yard line, stuffing a run.
For much of the scrimmage, BGSU's defense looked like the same one that ranked No. 6 in the country a year ago. The first and second team offenses struggled to find the end zone against the stout defense, though they did put together field goal scoring drives.
Other than Foster's blocked field goal, kickers Tyler Tate and Anthony Farinella looked strong. Tate connected on field goals of 23 yards, 30 yards and 38 yards, and the duo made all four extra point attempts, with Farinella going 3-for-3.
