Falcons Hold Second Scrimmage
August 18, 2013 | Football
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University football team held their second scrimmage of fall camp on Sunday afternoon. The scrimmage, which focused on situations for the majority of the afternoon, was a chance for fans and season ticket holders to see the Falcons before the season opener on August 29.
Matt Schilz and Matt Johnson saw the majority of time at quarterback, while James Knapke and Austin Valdez also took snaps. The Falcons worked on numerous situations throughout the afternoon.
Following a defensive stop on the first possession, the offense got on the board with a 15-yard scamper by Schilz to cap off the second possession. That touchdown run would start a string of four consecutive possessions that the Falcons would score points.
On the third possession of the day, Johnson would find Herve Coby wide open in the end zone for a five yard touchdown pass. The ensuing two possessions would be split by Johnson and Schilz, with the end result being a field goal on both. Starting at the defensive 30 yard line, the defense would hold their own on the fourth drive, holding the Falcon offense to a 48-yard field goal by Tyler Tate. The next drive would result in a 45-yard Tate field goal.
The offense would score just twice over the next nine drives, as the defense stepped up to get consecutive stops on three different occasions. Both scores by the offense during that span came in the air, with Johnson connecting with Marcus Levy (nine yards) and Chris Gallon (six yards).
Johnson and Schilz would each get just one more possession over the final 11 of the scrimmage, as Knapke and Valdez would get the majority of reps with the third team down the stretch. On Schilz's final drive, he would lead the offense into field goal territory, with Tate connecting on a 35-yard field goal. Johnson would lead the team inside the five yard line, where he handed the ball to William Houston for a two yard touchdown.
Knapke would lead two scoring drives of his own with the third team, with the first coming thanks to a seven yard run by Levy. Knapke then found Gehrig Dieter, who will sit out the 2013 season due to NCAA transfer rules, all alone for a 26-yard touchdown pass. Knapke and Valdez would split the final five possessions of the afternoon.
Following the scrimmage, head coach Dave Clawson, along with senior captain Paul Swan, talked to the media about the scrimmage. Videos of both interviews can be found above. Additionally, a photo gallery from the afternoon can be found at the link above.
