BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team completed the first day of action at Stone Ridge Golf Club on Monday (Sept. 16), with a 36-hole score of 581 (292-289). The Falcons trail by only four strokes to Marshall University and Valparaiso, who are both tied for first with identical scores of 577.
Second year head coach Kevin Farrell featured a lineup of one senior, two juniors and two freshman, seeing two of his players place in the top five overall individually on the day, helping the Orange and Brown place fourth overall on the day.
Coming off a strong collegiate tournament debut in Huntington, W.Va., freshman Jose Narro continued his steller early season play with a 3-under total of 141 (72-69), placing him tied for third place overall.
In his first round, Narro totaled four birdies on the round, including back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes. The two-hole stretch helped him finish the nine with a 1-under 35, before paring the first hole to hand him an even 72.
With continuous play throughout the day, Narro picked up right where he left off, making par on his first three out of four holes. Narro then got hot once again, making two consecutive birdies on the par-4 sixth and par-5 seventh hole, helping him make the turn with a 35. He continued good ball striking on his final nine, making three birdies on the 11th and 14th holes to help him come in with a back nine of 34.
On the day, Narro played the 14th hole at 2-under par, the 11th hole 1-under par and the back nine 3-under on the day.
Chris Melvin, who is co-captain and senior of the Orange and Brown, also played well on the Falcons home course. Melvin carded a 36-hole score of 142, second to only Narro on the team, and tied for fifth overall in the field of 81 players.
On a cold windy day at the par 72, 7,064 yard Stone Ridge Golf Club, Melvin played the wind just right, coming away with consecutive rounds of 1-under par 71's. Melvin found his swing on the back nine in both of his rounds, coming away with a day total of 4-under par over the final nine.
Brett Rinker, the other freshman that competed for BGSU, finished his day with a 148, tying him for 16th place. Rinker also found success on the back nine, birding the par-4 10th and the par-4 14th, helping him come in with an even 36 in his first round, before finishing the front side with a 1-over 37. Rinker shot a first round 1-over 73.
Rinker finished his day with a 3-over 75, giving the Falcons three players in the top 16 overall in the field that featured 12 teams.
The two juniors, Devin O'Grady and Ryan Triller, completed the lineup for Coach Farrell. O'Grady , who played in his first collegiate tournament for the Falcons, carding a 36-hole score of 160 (81-79). Triller on the other hand, carded a 150 (76-74), improving by two strokes in the second round.
The Orange and Brown will be right back in action tomorrow morning, and is slated to be in the second-to-last group for the tournament. BGSU will look to make a move in the field, trailing only by four strokes to a familiar foe in Marshall, who they played against last week in the 44th Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. The field will tee off on both nines, beginning at 8:00 a.m., with 18 holes remaining.
