BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team finished the 13th annual John Piper Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon (Sept.17), finishing fourth overall in a field of 12 teams. Marshall University, who hosted their annual tournament a week ago, won with a team score of 866 at Stone Ridge Golf Club.
Entering the final round, the Falcons trailed both Marshall and Valparaiso by only four strokes. However, the Orange and Brown were unable to make a dent, finishing the day in the same position as they started.
Â
Farrell's decision to play a lineup of Chris Melvin, Ryan Triller, Devin O'Grady, Brett Rinker and Jose Narro paid off well in the end, as four of the five players placed in the top 14 in the field of 81 players.
Â
Melvin, who was the lone senior that played in the tournament for BGSU, shot his second-best 54-hole score in his Falcon career. Melvin carded a third round even-par 72, giving him a tournament total of 2-under (214). With the resilient showing on the par-72, 7,064 yard Stone Ridge Golf Club, Melvin finished second overall in the field.
Â
Melvin started his final round making a birdie on the par-4 second after making par on the first hole. Melvin then stayed consistent throughout the first nine, making seven straight pars en route to an opening nine score of 35. After making bogey on his first two out of three holes on the back nine, Melvin rebounded nicely, making birdie on two of his final six holes for a 37.
Â
Narro, who carded the best round for BGSU yesterday, carded a 3-over 75 in his final round. Narro finished his second tournament of his young Falcon career with an even-par 216 (72-69-75), tying him for fifth place overall.
Â
In the final round, Narro battled on the front nine, coming away with an even-par 36. Narro played his final nine 3-over to finish the day with a 75. On the round, Narro had five birdies and six pars.
Â
Junior Ryan Triller also had a strong showing in his final round. Improvement was the focal point for Triller as he improved his score in each of his three rounds. The final round, however, was the biggest improvement, shaving three strokes off his previous round of 74, carding a 1-under 71 on the day. The stellar play gave Triller an overall score of 221 (76-74-71), placing him tied for 14th.
Â
Triller played his first four holes 2-over before making par in a five hole stretch, making the turn with a 37. However, Triller got hot over the final nine. Triller made birdie on the par-4 11th and again on the driver-able par-4 17th. Coming into the clubhouse with a par on the tough 453 yard 18th hole, Triller earned a back nine score of 34.
Â
Freshman Brett Rinker and Junior Devin O'Grady rounded out the five competitors for the Orange and Brown. Rinker shot an impressive 1-over 73, giving him a 54-hole total of 221 (73-75-73). Meanwhile, O'Grady carded a 54-hole total of 244 (81-79-84).
Â
The men's golf team will be back in action in Santa Clara, Calif., at the Cabo Del Sol Intercollegiate tournament on Oct. 6. The event will take place over three days before turning their attention to the ODU/OBX tournament on Oct. 20.
