Betsy Kenniston Challenge Generates $68,000 In Gifts
September 16, 2013 | Women's Golf
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department is proud to announce that the Betsy Kenniston Women's Golf Challenge has successfully ended, raising $68,000 to support the BGSU women's golf program. The challenge started this past winter when Kenniston announced that she would match the first $25,000 raised for the women's golf program. Since January, the program has been able to raise $43,000 to add to Kenniston's commitment to help support scholarships, recruiting, and travel budgets for the team.
"I fell in love with Bowling Green as a student in the 1970s and am so fortunate to live close enough to be a regular multi-sport fan," Kenniston said. "I'm an avid golfer and the women's golf program has gotten better and better under (head coach) Stephanie Young's leadership. But, it is a non-revenue sport with a small budget so donations like this really go a long way. I also wanted to reach out to encourage others to donate and the challenge did just that."
Kenniston graduated from BGSU in 1979 with a degree in physical education. While at the University, she played lacrosse and is currently organizing a reunion this fall for some of her teammates that have not been back to campus in 30 years. Along with her gift to golf, she also made a commitment to softball and created a scholarship in the College of Education.
"I want to publicly recognize Betsy's leadership and generosity through this initiative," BGSU Director of Athletics Chris Kingston said. "She is an inspiration to all of us and we are thankful for this collaborative gift.
The women's golf program, under Young, has steadily improved in her eight years leading the program. The Falcons placed sixth at the MAC Championships a year ago, their best finish since 2003. The team opened the 2013 fall season with a third place finish out of 14 teams at the Redbird Invitational.
"On behalf of everyone surrounding BGSU Athletics and women's golf, we say thank you to Betsy," Young said. "Her generosity and passion for this University are contagious. She attends numerous events and is always cheering her Falcons to victory, both on and off the field. Her gift will have a lasting impact on student-athletes for years to come."
