BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University volleyball team dominated Youngstown State on Tuesday night, sweeping the Penguins by a score of 25-13, 25-16, 29-27. The match was played inside the Stroh Center in front of 654 fans.
The Falcons hit .433 as a team in the first set, as they never trailed en route to posting a 25-13 win. The defense showed up early on, as Jelena Sunjic and Kaitlyn Skinner teamed up for two early blocks. Sunjic would add a kill, and the Falcons led 4-0 after a service ace by Erica Fullenkamp. After a YSU point to make it 4-1, the Orange and Brown would score four straight to extend the lead to 8-1. The closest Youngstown State would come the rest of the set would be 10-5, as the Falcons dominated play both offensively and defensively in the set for the 25-13 triumph. Lindsey Butterfield led the Falcon attack in the first set, as she posted seven kills while hitting .600. Kelsey Bates added four kills in just five attempts, while Fullenkamp had 13 assists in the first set alone.
Once again in the second set, the Falcons never trailed, as they jumped out to an identical 4-0 lead in the set. The Penguins would show some fight in the set, as they would battle back to within a point, at 9-8. Two straight attack errors by YSU's Shannon Watson, followed by a Sunjic kill gave the Falcons a 12-8 advantage. The Penguins would once again narrow the deficit, as they would close to within 12-10. A Youngstown State attack error would open the floodgates, however, as the Falcons would score 13 of the final 19 points to claim a 25-16 win in the second set.
Coming out of halftime, the Falcons had the Penguins walking on thin ice Tuesday night. Once again, BGSU would score the first point of the set, but YSU would respond to take their first lead of the match at 4-3. The Falcons would keep it close, but were forced into a timeout trailing 14-11. Out of the timeout the Penguins would extend the lead to 18-13, but the Orange and Brown would respond, tying the set at 19 apiece. Following a Youngstown State timeout, the two teams would exchange blows, point by point until the Falcons found themselves with a match point at 25-24. The two teams, however, would alternate the next five points, as the match entered a deadlock at 27-27 in the third set. A kill by Paige Penrod would have the Falcons on the doorstep of their second victory of the season. Facing their fourth match point, the Falcons would ice the Penguins to finally win the third set, 29-27.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-7 on the season. They will return to the road this weekend for two games at the Louisville Invitational. Bowling Green will take on Rice and Virginia Tech on Saturday in the tournament.
