Bayer And Gates Set To Showcase Talents To NFL Scouts Over Weekend
January 17, 2014 | Football
A pair of former Bowling Green State University football players will get the opportunity to showcase their talents to NFL scouts this weekend at their respective all-star games. Tight end Alex Bayer will play in the East-West Shrine Game, while safety BooBoo Gates will take part in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.
Bayer, who graduated from Bowling Green in December, is a 6-foot-4 tight end from Pickerington, Ohio. He was named third team All-MAC in 2013, catching 37 passes for 593 yards and four touchdowns. He was second on the team in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns. He will play for head coach Jerry Glanville on the East team. Bayer is one of just four players from the Mid-American Conference on the East roster, joined by Toledo's Zac Kerin, Northern Illinois' Jordan Lynch, and Ohio's Travis Carrie. Ball State's Keith Wenning and Toledo's Bernard Reedy will compete on the West roster.
Gates, who is a two-time first team All-MAC safety, is from Middletown, Ohio. One of the most dynamic players to every play at BGSU, Gates is the only player in school history to return a kickoff, punt, fumble recovery, and interception for a touchdown in his career. In the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, Gates will compete on the American team with two other players from Mid-American Conference schools. Gates will be joined by WR Alex Neutz from Buffalo and OL Ryan McGrath from Ohio. The trio of Mid-American Conference stars will be coached by former Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green.
Both games will take place on Saturday (Jan. 18) on national television. The East-West Shrine Game will begin at 4:00 p.m. ET and is televised live on NFL Network. The game will take place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The NFLPA Collegiate Bowl will kickoff from Carson, Calif. at 6:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The game will be played at the StubHub Center, home of the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS.
In addition to Bayer and Gates playing on national television Saturday, former Falcon Chris Jones will partake in the NFL's Conference Finals Sunday afternoon. Jones, a member of the New England Patriots, will take on the Denver Broncos at 3:00 p.m. ET on CBS (Jan. 19).
