Falcons Rally To Stun Michigan State
January 17, 2014 | Women's Swimming & Diving
East Lansing, Mich. – The Bowling Green swimming team rallied late to pull off a 150-144 win over Michigan State Friday night in a meet held at East Lansing High School. The Falcons won the final two events to overtake the Spartans.
Bowling Green swam well throughout most of the meet but after giving up all 32 diving points, the Falcons trailed 135-123 with just two events to go. BGSU cut into that deficit in the 200 individual medley as Joelle Scheps won the event with a time of 2:08.11. Petra Laudova finished third and Jordan Bullock fourth to get the Falcons within three at 140-137 to the final race of the night.
In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Victoria Griffin, Kayla Effinger, Hannah Newman and Brittany Szekely raced to a time of 1:34.94 to grab 11 of the 16 points awarded in the event. Anna Babinec, Sadie Ahlers, Maya Skorupski and Emily Waller picked up two more points with a third place finish as Bowling Green won 150-144.
"I am proud of the team and how well they did tonight," BGSU Swimming Coach Petra Martin said. "We have been training very hard the last few weeks and still have some heavy-duty stuff ahead of us. But tonight we were focused on the right things and it showed. The team worked together, supported each other, left all the tiredness behind and fought hard. Everyone stepped up and did what they were supposed to do. We have a few more tough weeks ahead before we start getting ready for the MAC Championships but we are excited."
In all, Bowling Green won eight of the 14 swimming events and finished with the top two finishes in three events. Along with the 200 freestyle relay victory, freshman Griffin had individual victories in the 100 and 200 freestyle. She moves to 5-0 in the 100 freestyle in dual meets and 4-0 in the 200 freestyle.
Skorupski and Scheps also won a pair of individual events. Skorupski took the 100 and 200 backstroke, while Scheps was victorious in the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley that set up the final race. Szekely, who anchored the 200 freestyle relay team, posted a 50 freestyle win also.
The Falcons fell behind early as Michigan State won the first two events, the 200 medley relay and the 1000 freestyle. But BGSU rallied with wins in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. The meet went back-and-forth with Michigan State taking the lead with 16 points after event eight – one-meter diving. Bowling Green rallied to take the lead until the Spartans grabbed another 16 points in event 14 – three-meter diving. From there, the Falcons won the final two events for the victory.
With the win, Bowling Green improves to 2-3 in dual meets this year. The Falcons will next compete at rival Toledo Friday night at 4 p.m.
