BGSU Wins Third Straight Nailbiter
January 31, 2014 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Athens, Ohio – In a scenario that is becoming quite familiar, the Bowling Green swimming team needed a strong performance in the final race of the night to win its dual meet. For the third consecutive weekend, the Falcons did just that to beat the Ohio 155-138 Friday afternoon.
Ohio finished second at the MAC Swimming and Diving Championships a year ago and entered Friday's meet with a 2-1 dual meet record against conference opponents. But the Falcons once again overcame a 32-point deficit in diving events by winning eight of the 14 races. Bowling Green won both relays, got a pair of victories from freshman Victoria Griffin and sophomore Daniela Carrillo, and had wins from Jordan Bullock, Brittany Szekely and Kristin Filby.
Although the Falcons did not need a victory in the final race, the 400 medley relay, Bowling Green could not allow Ohio's two relay teams to finish ahead of the Falcons. But Maya Skorupski, Carrillo, Joelle Scheps and Hannah Newman swam a 3:48.14 to win the race and clinch the meet.
"It was another exciting meet for us," BGSU Swimming Coach Petra Martin said. "We swam great tonight, the team was very focused and we pulled together. I am proud of the team and the work we are doing together."
Griffin posted a season-best time of 1:50.37 in the 200 freestyle to improve to 6-0 in the event in dual meets. She was followed by teammates Scheps in second and Petra Laudova in fourth. Griffin moved to 7-0 in the 100 freestyle with her second-fastest time of the year, a race of 50.62 seconds, and was backed up by Szekely in second.
Carillo won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke and was followed by freshman Filby in both events for second place. Filby had the best meet of her collegiate career, posting season-best times in those two events. Carmen Young added a third place finish as the Falcons swept the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke.
Bullock picked up her second win of the season in the 200 butterfly and Szekely again won the 50 freestyle, her fourth dual meet victory of the season in the event. The Falcons took the top two spots in both the 50 freestyle and the 200 butterfly to pick up big points.
Scheps placed second in a highly-competitive 100 butterfly, posting her second-fastest time of the year in 56.77 seconds.
Ohio drops to 4-3 overall with the loss and 2-2 in MAC competition. Bowling Green improves to identical records of 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the MAC, having now won three in a row. The Falcons will compete at Marshall (2-6 record) Saturday in a non-conference meet at 2 p.m.
