Vero Beach, Fla. – Seniors Joe Cooper and Ryan Triller each posted a subpar round of play on Monday to pace the Bowling Green State University men's golf team on day one of the Quail Valley Intercollegiate hosted by McNeese State University in Vero Beach, Fla. The Falcons carded team rounds of 290 and 289 to conclude day one of play in a tie for ninth-place overall.
The Falcons' combined two-round team score of 579, +3, was good enough to put BGSU in the top-10 of the 15-team field and in a tie with the University of Connecticut.
BGSU finished the first day of play ahead of Rice, Arizona, Louisiana Monroe, Houston Baptist and North Dakota State.
"With all the tough and difficult golf courses we have played already this season, it really prepared us well for this tournament and the strongest field we have played with so far this fall," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "We played really well and finished really well. We got awesome play from our seniors with both (Joe) Cooper and (Ryan) Triller really stepping up. I really feel solid about the way we are playing going into tomorrow, to shoot 290 and 289 in the big field that we are in and to be ahead of teams like Arizona and Rice, as well as getting the chance to play with two really good teams tomorrow is exactly what we wanted to gear up towards heading into our last fall event."
Cooper led the Falcons on Monday with a first round 71, -1 under par, and a second round 72, even par, to finish the day in a tie for 21st-place overall with a 36-hole score of 143, -1 under par. The lefty, who had an eagle on the par-5 hole 14 on the second round, also totaled six birdies and 22 pars over his opening two rounds of play.
Making the biggest jump from round one to round two on Monday was Triller who improved by six strokes between the opening two rounds of play.  The senior posted a first round 75, +3, and then followed that up with a second round 69, -3 under par, to end day one in a tie for 25th-place overall with a combined two-round score of 144, even par. Like Cooper, Triller eagled the par-5 hole 14 over his second round, but added five birdies and a team-high 23 pars on the day. His second round 69 matched his career low 18-hole score at BGSU.
Right behind Triller are fellow BGSU teammates Jose Narro and Cameron Michalak. Narro carded rounds of 72, even par, and 74, +2, to finish day one in a tie for 39th-place overall with his combined score of 146, +2, while Michalak turned in rounds of 72, even par, and 76, +4, to wrap up day one with a combined 36-hole score of 148, +4, good enough to place in a tie for 50th overall. Narro matched Cooper with six birdies and equaled Triller with a team-high 23 pars, while the freshman Michalak totaled six birdies and 18 pars over his first day of play.
Rounding out the lineup for BGSU was sophomore Brett Rinker who shot rounds of 77, +5, and 74, +2, on Monday. Rinker, who registered five birdies and 20 pars over his 36-holes of play, will enter the final round of play on Tuesday in a tie for 62nd-place overall with a combined score of 151, +7.
North Florida leads after two rounds of play with a team-low 36-hole score of 564, -12 under par, while host McNeese State is in second-place with a team score of 566, -10 under par. Jacksonville (567, -9) and TCU (567, -9) are tied for third-place overall, while rounding out the top-five on the team leaderboard is Tennessee with a combined score of 568, -8 under par.
BGSU will tee-off tomorrow morning beginning at 9:20 a.m. with Kentucky and Stephen F. Austin on hole number 10.
