Vero Beach, Fla. – For the second straight tournament, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team had all five players post all three of their 18-hole scores in the 70s, en route to an 11th-place team finish at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate hosted by McNeese State University in Vero Beach, Fla.
Bowling Green carded a third round team score of 294, +6, on Tuesday to finish with rounds of 290, 289 and 294, and a combined tournament score of 873, +9, good enough to finish in 11th-place overall in the 15 team field.
The Falcons finished ahead of Connecticut, Rice, Houston Baptist and North Dakota State, and only four strokes behind Louisiana Monroe and Arizona who both finished in a tie for ninth-place overall with identical team scores of 869, +5.
"I'm proud of the way we played the last two days," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "We played against a very, very tough tournament field and had all five of our players shoot in the 70s over all three of their rounds. Now we have to continue our strong play and carry over this momentum into our final fall event in a few weeks."
Having entered the final round of play on Tuesday at -1 under par, senior Joe Cooper posted a third round 75, +3, to finish in a tie for 32nd-place overall. Cooper, who led the Falcons for the entire three-round event, totaled a 54-hole score of 218, +2. The lefty had by far his best performance of the fall season to date, as he carded one eagle, 11 birdies and 30 pars over his three rounds of play.
Posting another solid round of play on Tuesday was Jose Narro, as the sophomore followed up his rounds of 72, even par, and 74, +2, on Monday, with a third and final round 73, +1, to finish with a combined three-round score of 219, +3, and in a tie for 36th-place. The Tampico, Mexico native, finished with seven birdies and 38 pars.
Freshman Cameron Michalak led BGSU with a team-low round of 72, even par, on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 41st-place overall. The newcomer shot rounds of 72, 76 and 72, on his way to a combined 54-hole score of 220, +4, the lowest 54-hole score of his young career at BGSU. Michalak recorded nine birdies and 30 pars for the two-day event.
After matching his career-low round 69, -3 under par, over his second round of play on Monday, Ryan Triller carded a third round 79, +7, on Tuesday morning. Combined, the senior posted a54-hole score of 223, +7, with rounds of 75, 69 and 79 for the event, finishing in a tie for 54th overall. Triller finished the event with one eagle, five birdies and 36 pars overall.
Sophomore Brett Rinker carded his second straight round of 74, +2, on Tuesday, and combined with his first round of 77, +5, the Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania native finished in a tie for 63rd-place overall with his combined three-round score of 225, +9. Rinker finished with nine birdies and 30 pars for the 54-hole tournament.
North Florida took home the team championship with a combined three-round team score of 840, -24 under par. The Ospreys finished ahead of Tennessee (846, -18) and Michigan State (853, -11) who finished in second and third, respectively.
BGSU will wrap up its 2014 fall season on Nov. 7-9 at the Kaanapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii.
