Seven Falcons Named To All-MAC Football Teams
December 03, 2014 | Football
CLEVELAND, Ohio—A total of seven Bowling Green State University football players were named All-Mid-American Conference, announced Wednesday morning by the league. Roger Lewis and Ryan Burbrink both earned first team honors, while Gabe Martin, Alex Huettel, Nick Johnson, Tyler Tate, and Bryan Thomas were also recognized by the MAC's head coaches and media.
Roger Lewis (Pickerington, Ohio) was named first team All-MAC at wide receiver. Lewis, a true freshman, is the first BGSU player to earn first team All-MAC as a freshman since Brian McClure in 1982. He is looking to become the first true freshman to surpass 1,000 yards receiving in a season, currently sitting a 934 heading into the MAC Championship Game. Lewis has a team-high 66 receptions and is tied for the team lead with five touchdown receptions.
Ryan Burbrink (Shady Side, Md.) was named first team All-MAC at punt returner. Known as one of the most consistent and prolific punt returners in the conference, Burbrink is averaging 12.1 yards per return. Against Virginia Military Institute earlier this season, Burbrink took a punt 75 yards to the house, which marked his second straight season with at least one punt return for a touchdown. Last season, Burbrink earned second team All-MAC honors at punt returner.
Alex Huettel (Pickerington, Ohio) was named second team All-MAC at offensive line for the second consecutive season. Huettel, who has started 39 consecutive games for the Orange and Brown, has served as the veteran leader on a young offensive line this season. The Falcons offensive has rushed for over 2,100 yards so far this season and passed for 3,100 more. The Falcons have 27 rushing touchdowns this season.
Gabe Martin (Grand Blanc, Mich.) was named second team All-MAC at linebacker for the second straight season. It is the third time that Martin has been named All-MAC in his career. He leads the team with 100 tackles this season, and stands at the top of the conference with 15.0 tackles for loss. Martin has added two interceptions, four pass breakups, three quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and a blocked kick. Over the past two weeks, the redshirt senior has made 5.5 tackles for loss.
Nick Johnson (Canton, Ohio) was named second team All-MAC at cornerback. He joins his teammate Lewis as a true freshman on the All-MAC teams. Johnson is second in the MAC with five interceptions – which ties him for most by a true freshman in school history with Martin Bayless (1980). His five interceptions are tops among true freshmen in the nation this season. Johnson has 61 tackles and six pass breakups on the year.
Bryan Thomas (Washington, Pa.) was named third team All-MAC at defensive line. A redshirt senior, Thomas had made 36 tackles this season, with 13.0 being for loss. He leads the Falcons with 6.0 sacks on the season, and is sixth in the country with five forced fumbles. Thomas ranks inside the top five for both tackles for loss and sacks. He has added two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.
Tyler Tate (Carroll, Ohio) was named third team All-MAC at placekicker. It is the first time that Tate has been named All-MAC during his career, after winning three MAC Player of the Week honors during the 2014 regular season. He has made 20-of-25 field goals this season, which is one shy of the all-time single season mark at Bowling Green. Tate has five games this season in which he has made multiple field goals, including against Indiana (Sept. 13) when he made a career high, and Doyt Perry Stadium record, four.
The Falcons continue preparations for the MAC Championship Game this Friday night, when they travel to Ford Field to take on West Division champion, Northern Illinois. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm on ESPN2.
