AUSTIN, Texas—Bowling Green State University placekicker Tyler Tate has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® First Team, announced on Thursday. The teams were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Tate becomes the first football player from Bowling Green to be named first team since Pat Jackson in 1990.
A redshirt junior from Carroll, Ohio, Tate is currently tied at the top of the record books for most field goals made in his career with 45. He is tied with current Pittsburgh Steelers placekicker, Shaun Suisham. On the season, Tate has made 20 field goals, which puts him just one field goal make shy of tying the all-time single season record at Bowling Green.
Tate holds a 3.97 grade point average in exercise science. He had been named Academic All-MAC in both active seasons as a member of the Orange and Brown. Just eight players on the 24-person first team hold a 3.97 GPA or higher.
Just two other players from the Mid-American Conference join Tate as Academic All-America® team members this season. Jordan Italiano of Kent State was named a first team member at defensive back while Central Michigan's Cooper Rush was the second team quarterback.
Tate becomes Bowling Green's first Academic All-America® recipient since Mike Thaler in 2005. He is the first player to earn first team honors since 1990 and just the third person to ever do so. He joins Pat Jackson (1989, 1990) and John Boles (1975) as Falcons to be named first team Academic All-America®.
He is an impressive 40-of-43 on extra point attempts this season, and has made 20-of-25 field goals. Tate has made 20 consecutive extra point attempts. In five different games, the Bloom-Carroll graduate has made multiple field goals including a career-high and Doyt Perry Stadium record four versus Indiana. He has also made three on two occasions – Buffalo and Kent State – and two in two other games – UMass and Toledo. For his efforts this season, Tate has earned three MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week honors (Sept. 15, Sept. 29, Oct. 6), and yesterday was named All-MAC.
Tate's honor marks just BGSU's 14th-ever Academic All-America® award. He joins Lawrence Kelly (1969, Third Team), John Boles (1974, Second Team), John Boles (1975, First Team), Joe Russell (1975, Second Team), Dave Preston (1976, Second Team), Mike Otten (1986, Second Team), Pat Jackson (1988, Second Team), Pat Jackson (1989, First Team), Pat Jackson (1990, First Team), Bob Dudley (1992, Second Team), Bob Dudley (1993, Second Team), Craig Jarrett (2003, Second Team), and Mike Thaler (2005, Second Team).
