BGSU Women’s Golf Adds Three for 2015-16
December 08, 2014 | Women's Golf
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University head women's golf coach Stephanie Young is excited to announce the addition of Erin Fahey (Austin, Texas/Vandegrift H.S.), Julia Durkin (Miramar, Florida/Everglade H.S.) and Sarah Kern (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro H.S.) to the Falcon family, as all three will continue both their academic and athletic careers at BGSU in the fall of 2015.
"All three of these young women are first class in every way. They will bring an immediate impact and contributions to our program not only on the course and in the classroom, but in the community and with anybody they build relationships with across our campus," commented Coach Young. "They are tournament tested at every level and have a proven record of knowing how to win. These individuals are ready for the next chapter of their lives and we are thrilled that they will be growing and developing at BGSU. These women will be very successful Falcons and will help us move our mission forward."
Fahey comes to Bowling Green from Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas where she played for head coach Matt Wernecke for four years. While playing for the Vipers, she helped her team to become back-to-back State Qualifiers in both 2014 and 2013, a 2014 District Championship and a second-place finish at the 2014 Regionals. In 2013, her team won the Regional Championship and finished in second at the District Championship. Fahey, who posted back-to-back sixth-place finishes at the 2014 and 2013 State Championship Tournament, is a two-time Academic All-Conference selection. She was named to the First-Team All-Conference Team in 2014, as well as Second-Team All-State and Second-Team All-Region. Fahey was also tabbed the Team MVP in 2014, as she posted the lowest scoring average and the lowest round for her team on the season. In 2013, Fahey was named to the Second-Team All-Conference Team and received the Second to None Award.
Off the links, the two-time team captain is a member of the French Honor Society, the French Club, the Philosophy Club, C2, and Team Bible Study, as well as a member of the Student Council.
"Erin Fahey is a true athlete and fierce competitor, yet understands the opportunity and privilege of being part of something bigger in the team framework," commented Coach Young. "She is an outstanding leader on her Vandegrift team and has shown an amazing ability to bring her teammates together to work towards common goals."

Durkin will head to BGSU from Miramar, Florida, where she attends Everglade High School. The rising senior has played well on the junior tour, taking second-place at both the 2014 Hurricane Junior Golf Tour in Woodmont, Florida and the 2013 College Golf Coaches Combines in Henderson, Nevada. Durkin posted first-place finishes at the 2013 SFPGA Junior Tour Challenge at the Polo Club of Boca Raton, Florida and the 2013 SFPGA Junior Tour Challenge at the Westchester Country Club. She also took first-place overall at the 2012 Florida State Golf Association Junior Team Championship in the 13 to 15 Division. Totaling over 27 first-place wins at various IMJT, GCJGF and U.S. Kids Golf Tournaments, Durkin was named the Gold Coast Junior Golf Foundation Player of the Year in 2012. The Floridian was also named the U.S. Kids Golf Player of the Year in both 2010 and 2009. Her best 2014 AJGA finish this summer came on June 2-5 at the Kansas Junior at Buffalo Dunes in which she carded rounds of 73, 83 and 76 for the event.
Durkin, who has a sister that plays tennis at Rice University and a father that ran track & field at both the University of Houston and Florida International University, plans to major in Architecture at BGSU.
"Julia Durkin is an outstanding young woman with a deep drive to excel both academically and athletically. I believe her transition to a team style of play in the college game will only further her talents and abilities," continued Young. "She has all the tools to be a success individually for her team, but also has the personality and leadership skills to make a very positive and contagious impact on our locker room."
Kern will join the Falcons from Springboro, Ohio. A senior at Springboro High School, Kern was named a Scholar-Athlete and earned a spot on the First-Team All-Conference Team in her only year on the team to date. She has twice won the Ohio Junior World event, while also placing second on two other occasions, and won the Ohio International Optimist Tournament. Kern has also posted a win at the Ohio Junior Girls 15 & Under event, finished in the top-10 at the American Junior Golf Association event and has posted at least one tour event victory in the KJGA, USJGT, AAJGT and the SOPGA.
Kern, whose brother plays golf at the University of Pennsylvania, is a member of the National Honors Society, the SADD Club and the Interact Club. She also serves as a student mentor.
"Sarah Kern has such a passion for the game of golf and has competed at every level. This will undoubtedly help her achieve success at the college level and be a great addition to our program," added Young. "She also has a clear vision for her academics and dream of becoming an Intervention Specialist to impact the lives of students."
"We welcome all our new student-athletes and their families- they will be wonderful additions and help sharpen and strengthen us immediately as a program," Young concluded.
