BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Bowling Green State University head football coach Dino Babers has announced that the Falcons will host the annual Spring Football Game on Saturday, April 5, beginning at 12:00 p.m. The game, which will conclude the spring practice schedule, will be the last of 15 practices during the next several weeks. Spring practice will begin on Thursday, Feb. 27.
Bowling Green, who returns 12 starters from the 2013 team that went 10-4, will look to defend their MAC Championship under first year head coach Dino Babers in 2014. Babers, who takes over for Dave Clawson, comes to Bowling Green after two seasons at Eastern Illinois.
At EIU, Babers' offense was the best in all of the Football Championship Subdivision. At EIU, Babers mentored Walter Payton Award winner Jimmy Garoppolo, who passed for 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns in 2013. The Panthers averaged 48.9 points per game and 595.5 yards per game, both the best in all of the FCS. Receivers Erik Lora (1,544 yards, 19 touchdowns) and Adam Drake (1,305 yards, 13 touchdowns) helped EIU average 376.3 passing yards per game, while running backs Shepard Little (1,551 yards, 15 touchdowns) and Taylor Duncan (988 yards, 10 touchdowns) helped the Panthers average 219.2 rushing yards per game.
Five All-MAC players return from a season ago, in which the Falcons featured the Mid-American Conference's top defense and third-best offense. Travis Greene, who set the school's all-time single season rushing record with 1,594 yards, returns in 2014 after earning second team All-MAC a year ago. Right guard Alex Huettel (second team All-MAC) also returns on the offensive side of the ball. Second team All-MAC linebackers D.J. Lynch and Gabe Martin return to anchor what has been the MAC's top defense unit for two straight seasons. Ryan Burbrink, a second team All-MAC punt returner, is one of several special teamers who return off one of the most dynamic and electric special teams' units in the nation.
Bowling Green has announced its opponents for the 2014 schedule. The Falcons will travel to Western Kentucky (Aug. 28) and Wisconsin (Sept. 20) during nonconference play, while hosting VMI (Sept. 6) and Indiana (Sept. 13). In addition, Bowling Green will host Buffalo, Kent State, Ball State, and Western Michigan, while traveling to Akron, Ohio, UMass, and Toledo during MAC play. Dates and times are expected to be announced at a later date, but fans can view the 2014 opponent release by CLICKING HERE.
