Raleigh, N.C. – Senior Jeanette Pettigrew met the Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying marks in the 100 and the long jump as the Bowling Green State University track and field team opened the outdoor season in successful fashion Friday night at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State.
Over the first three years of her career, Pettigrew had competed exclusively in sprints and relays. However, late in this year's indoor season, she started long jumping and quickly made an impact, placing fourth at the MAC Championships. She carried that momentum into Friday's meet, jumping 19-feet-4.25 to move into fifth all-time in BGSU history.
Pettigrew also ran well in the 100 to open the season, scorching to a time of 11.91 seconds, better than the MAC automatic mark of 11.95. She finished 12th out of the 154 collegiate runners who competed in the event.
Freshman Makenzie Wheat continued her impressive first-year in the throws. After a strong indoor season, she opened the outdoor campaign by throwing the shot put 46-feet, putting her in 10th place in BGSU history in the event.
While Pettigrew was the team's top long jumper, teammate Alicia Arnold was not far behind. The sophomore transfer jumped 19-00.50, less than an inch shy of the MAC automatic qualifying mark of 19-1.
Redshirt sophomore Andrea Alt was the first Falcon to compete in the outdoor season, taking part in the 5000 early in the day. After setting a career-best to place 10th at the MAC Championships a year ago, she bettered that time by almost four seconds to finish in 17:20.62.
Bowling Green will complete the Raleigh Relays with day two of the meet Saturday.
