White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. – On a rainy, wet and windy final day of play, Bowling Green State University's Jose Narro carded a low round 69, -1 under par, to take first-place individual honors and lead the Falcons to a second-place team finish overall at the inaugural Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational hosted by BSGU and Marshall at The Old White TPC Golf Course in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.
BGSU carded a team low round of 285, +5, on Tuesday morning, to jump two teams and finish in second-place overall out of the seven team field. The Falcons' third round team score of 285 was 10 strokes ahead of the next team, as Bowling Green took second-place overall with a final 54-hole team score of 867, +27 (295, 287, 285).
Narro posted his second straight sub-par round over the final round of play, as he turned in a score of 69, -1 under par, to pull away for the individual win. The freshman carded rounds of 70, 67 and 69 to post a tournament low 54-hole score of 206, -4 under par. Narro was the lone player under par for the two-day event.
The win was Narro's first-ever intercollegiate win and marks his third top-10 finish of the year.
Fellow freshman Brett Rinker and junior Joe Cooper each saved their best round for last on Tuesday morning, as Rinker shot a 70, even par, while Cooper finished the final day of play with a 71, +1. Rinker finished in a tie for fourth-place overall with rounds of 72, 74 and 70 to give him a combined score of 216, +6, while Cooper finished the three-round event with scores of 74, 76 and 71 and a 54-hole score of 221, +11, good enough to place him in 11th-place overall.
Senior Chris Melvin earned a top-20 finish, as he posted rounds of 79, 70 and 75 to put him in a tie for 18th-place overall with his three-round score of 224, +14.
BGSU's Ryan Triller carded an 82, +12, on Tuesday to finish in 38th-place with a tournament score of 240, +30 (81, 77, 82).
As individuals at the event, BGSU's Holden Pahr registered rounds of 74, 74 and 77 to finish in a tie for 22nd overall at 225, +15, while senior Joshua Bialecki recorded scores of 79, 76 and 77 to place in a tie at 32nd with his 54-hole combined score of 232, +22.
Marshall University, who had a nine stroke lead heading into the final day of play, was able to hold off the charging Falcons to take first-place team honors with their combined score of 863, +23.
Old Dominion (880, +40) and William & Mary (880, +40) finished tied for third overall, while George Washington finished in fifth-place with their team score of 897, +57.
The men's golf team will return to action this weekend, as the Falcons will take part in the Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State on April 19-20 at the Penn State Blue Course in University Park, Pa.
