Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will return to the links this weekend to compete in the Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State University on April 19-20 in State College, Pa.
This year's Rutherford Intercollegiate will be held at the renovated par 71, 7,202-yards Penn State Blue Course which hosted its first major amateur event in 2009, the Big Ten Men's Golf Championship. With the updates and improvements made in 2007, the Blue Course now proudly sits with some of the top courses in the Big Ten. The Blue Course has also hosted numerous events conducted by the USGA, FCWT, AJGA, IJGT, PGA Junior Series and the West Penn Golf Association.
The 14-team field consists of the host school in Penn State and the 2013 Rutherford Intercollegiate Team Champion in Binghamton, as well as the University of Minnesota, Xavier, Bowling Green State, Eastern Michigan, Rutgers, Seton Hall, University of Connecticut, Army, Maryland, Youngstown State, La Salle and Wright State.
The Falcons, who finished seventh out of the 14 team field in last year's Rutherford Intercollegiate, will send the team of Jose Narro, Brett Rinker, Joe Cooper, Chris Melvin and Holden Pahr. Both Cooper and Pahr competed in the Rutherford Intercollegiate last year with Pahr shooting a 230, +17, and Cooper carding a 231, +18, to finish in 34th and 39th, respectively.
Narro, the reigning MAC Men's Golfer of the Week, is coming off his first-ever intercollegiate win at The Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational early this week. The freshman posted rounds of 70, 67 and 69 to win the event with the only sub-par 54-hole score of 206, -4 under par. Over his last four rounds of play, Narro has turned in rounds of 71, 70, 67 and 79 overall.
Like Narro, Rinker has played well over the last two months, as the freshman posted a top-four finish last week at the Greenbrier Collegiate. The fourth-place finish was the fourth top-15 finish of the season for Rinker who has posted a stroke average of 73.54 over 24 rounds of play thus far this year, his first at BGSU.
BGSU's Cooper is looking to continue his strong play this weekend, as the junior recorded his lowest 54-hole score of the year at 221, +11, earlier this week at The Old White TPC Course at The Greenbrier Resort. The junior posted an 11th-place finish for the event, which included matching his season-low round of 71 over the final 18-holes of play, and lowered his season stroke average to 75.61 on the year.
Teeing-off in his 10th event this season for the Falcons, Melvin returns to the links after carding rounds of 79, 70 and 75 for a combined score of 224, +14, at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational. The senior, who posted seven sub-par rounds in the fall season, has recorded five top-20 finishes on the year and has recorded a 73.71 stroke average over 24 rounds of play for the season.
Pahr played is way into the lineup with his 225, +15, 54-hole score at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational. Playing as an individual, the sophomore finished in a tie for 22nd-overall with rounds of 74, 74, and 77 over the two-day event. The Rutherford will be Pahr's third tournament of the spring and the fifth overall on the year.
Junior Ryan Triller will play as an individual at the event, as last year at the same event he led the Falcons with a seventh-place finish and a 54-hole combined score of 222, +9, with rounds of 73, 75 and 74. Last time out, Triller finished 38th overall at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational after posting back-to-back 73 rounds one month ago at the 2014 Desert Shootout in March.
Five players from each team will compete with the four lowest individual scores after each round counting toward the team total. Teams will be paired in groups of three and will be assigned tee times off 1 and 10. Players for each team will tee-off in descending order (5 to 1). Tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and 8:00 a.m. Sunday, pending weather conditions.
Live results will be available at www.Golfstat.com. A link to the live scoring will be available on the men's golf schedule page at www.BGSUFalcons.com.
