Ball State Edges Falcons, 4-3

BGSU faces Miami Saturday afternoon in Oxford
With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 15-8 overall and 5-2 in MAC matches. The Falcons drop to 10-7 and 4-3, respectively.
BSU captured all three doubles matches to take the initial point. And, that point proved to be crucial, as the Cardinals won three of the first four singles matches that finished. The Falcons were victorious in the remaining two singles contests, but came up one point short.
The Cardinals' second-flight duo of Kristel Sanders and Toni Ormond picked up an 8-2 win over senior Nikki Chiricosta and sophomore Katie Brozovich, while the BSU tandem of Courtney Wild and Ayaka Terashi downed Falcon freshmen Hannah Drayton and Harley Hutchison, 8-4, at the third flight.
The number-one doubles match went right down to the wire, but in the end, the BSU team of Courtney Earnest and Bethany Moore eked past senior Emily Reuland and sophomore Drew Fillis, 8-7, after taking the tiebreaker by a 7-5 score.
In singles action, Terashi got past Drayton at the fourth flight, but Chiricosta swept Earnest at the top flight. The BG senior co-captain won a 6-4 opening set, then used that momentum to breeze to a 6-0 second-set win, cutting BSU's match lead to 2-1.

But, the next two matches to conclude went the Cardinals' way. Moore topped Fillis at the fifth flight, including a 7-5 second-set outcome, and Sanders got past Brozovich at the third level, giving the hosts the fourth point necessary for victory.
Hutchison and Reuland each won 10-point super-tiebreakers to take their respective matches. Hutchison downed Ashlyn Rang at the sixth flight, winning the opening set by a 6-2 score before losing the second set in a tiebreaker that resulted in a 10-8 win for Rang. Hutchison and Rang immediately began another 'breaker, and this one went to the BG freshman, 10-7.
The second-flight match played out in similar fashion. Reuland got past Wild, 7-5, in the opening set, only to see Wild capture a second-set tiebreaker by a 7-5 score. Reuland was never headed in the 10-point tiebreaker, however, winning by a 10-3 score.
Reuland is 5-2 in MAC singles matches this season, playing at the second flight in all seven conference contests to date. Both Chiricosta and Reuland have won five consecutive singles matches.
Six of the Falcons' last eight regular-season MAC losses, dating to the 2011-12 season, have been by 4-3 scores.
The Falcons remain on the road, heading to Oxford, Ohio, for a Saturday (April 19) matchup with MAC-leading Miami. That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts. BGSU will return to Oxford next weekend for the MAC Championships, which will run from April 25-27.
