May 01, 2014 | Men's Basketball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Head Coach Chris Jans continues to add to his 2014-15 men's basketball roster with the signing of Jovan Austin to a National Letter of Intent to continue both his academic and athletic career at Bowling Green State University.
Austin, a teammate of fellow BGSU signee Delvin Dickerson, comes to Bowling Green after one season at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas where he helped to led the Dragons to a 26-8 overall record and a 15-4 record in conference play in 2013-14.
"Jovan Austin is a terrific basketball player with diverse talents. Jovan is very athletic, possesses great ball skills, will be an elite defender and is a shot maker," commented Coach Jans. "He has proven to be a Championship caliber player and leader in both high school and junior college. The fact he has played for Chuck Taylor (Paris JC) and Brandon Bennett (SGP) thrills me because of the quality of coaching and mentoring he has already received. Jovan will demonstrate the capacity to be an outstanding student-athlete at BGSU!"
From Grand Prairie, Texas, the 6-1, 170 pound guard averaged 9.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists last season where he shot over 46 percent from the field and 41 percent from behind the three-point line. In conference play, the sophomore increased his scoring average up to 10.4 points per game. He helped lead the Dragons to both a regular season conference championship and a Region XIV Tournament Championship. Paris qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament losing in the second round.
For his efforts, he was named to the All-Conference Second-Team, the All-Region XIV Third-Team and was named the Team's Co-MVP.
Austin played his freshman season at Angelo State University in 2012-13, where he was tabbed the Lone Star Conference Co-Freshman of the Year as he led the team in scoring, assists and steals. He averaged 12.3 points, 3.5 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game on the season, in which he started 23 out of 26 contests as a true freshman.
In his senior season at South Grand Prairie High School in 2011-12, Austin led the Warriors to a 35-3 overall record and to the District 7-5A Championship. Named the District 7-5A Offensive Player of the Year and to the All-Region Team, Austin led his team to the Regional Championship Game. He averaged 12.1 points overall and shot 52 percent from the field.
Austin will have two years of eligibility remaining at Bowling Green.
The rising junior joins a 2014 recruiting class of four players which along with Austin includes David "Pepe" Joseph (Queens, New York/Howard College (Texas), Delvin Dickerson (Houston, Texas/Paris JC), Rasheed Worrell (Coker, Alabama/Sipsey Valley H.S.).
