Bowling Green, Ohio – First-year head men's basketball coach Chris Jans has accepted an invitational to attend and take part in the 2014 Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic fundraising event on May 18-20.
The seventh annual Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic will be hosted at the MGM Grand on the Las Vegas Strip May 18-20, 2014.
"Once I was invited by Coach Kruger and it worked out schedule wise to be involved in this great event, I couldn't be more excited to play a small part," stated Coach Jans. "This event brings together a bunch of NCAA Division I head coaches, a bunch of celebrities and boosters from their respective schools, and they certainly have some fun with it. We play some golf a couple days out in Vegas on some really nice courses. They have receptions, but the end all, be all is to raise awareness and to raise money to help fight this horrible disease."
Oklahoma University men's basketball head coach Lon Kruger started the Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic in 2008 and the event has netted nearly $1.5 million in its six years. The money directly benefits the American Cancer Society's effort to finish the fight against cancer. Coach Kruger has a long and in-depth history with Coaches vs. Cancer, and in 2012 received the organization's national "Champion Award," which is presented to one coach at the Final Four each year.
Jans will join a long list of great NCAA men's basketball coaches at the 2014 fundraising event, including Colorado's Tad Boyle, Kansas State's Bruce Weber, Michigan's John Beilein, Nebraska's Tim Miles, North Carolina's Roy Williams, Oklahoma State's Travis Ford, Oregon's Dana Altman, South Carolina's Frank Martin, Texas Tech's Tubby Smith, UNLV's Dave Rice and Utah's Larry Krystkowiak.
About Coaches vs. Cancer
The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.
Because cancer has touched so many of our nation's basketball coaches, Coaches vs. Cancer offers them the unique opportunity to fight the disease. Through integrated fundraising activities and public awareness campaigns, participating coaches are truly making a difference in the fight against cancer and are raising awareness in their communities about the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and making healthy lifestyle choices.
The Coaches vs. Cancer program empowers coaches, their teams, and communities to join the fight against cancer by participating in awareness efforts, advocacy programs, and fundraising activities. Guided by the Coaches vs. Cancer Council, participating coaches help people with cancer today and to find cures to end the disease tomorrow, and have raised more than $87 million to help the American Cancer Society's mission.
