BGSU Tennis Team Earns NCAA Public Recognition Award Yet Again
May 07, 2014 | Women's Tennis
Falcons recognized for their APR score for ninth consecutive year
The NCAA is honoring more than 1,000 Division I sports teams – including the Bowling Green State University tennis program – for their high marks academically. Based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate, the tennis Falcons have earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award, given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean earn this honor for the ninth consecutive season. The BGSU tennis team is one of just 146 teams among all sports to have captured the award in every year since its inception. In fact, BGSU has had a perfect score of 1,000 in every year of the APR's existence.

All 146 teams -- including BGSU tennis -- that have earned Public Recognition Awards every year
That exclusive list of 146 teams includes just 16 women's tennis programs, and a total of only two teams among Mid-American Conference programs in all sports (Kent State women's cross country).
The tennis team was one of three from BGSU to receive public recognition on Wednesday, joining the women's golf and men's cross country teams. It is the most Falcon teams to receive public recognition since the 2006-07 academic year (tennis, volleyball and women's golf).
"We are thrilled to be recognized by the NCAA again this year," said Dean. "Being in the top 10 percent of tennis teams in all of NCAA Division I is quite an honor of which we are very proud.
"A lot goes into an award like this, including the hard work of the student-athletes and coaching staff as well as the support of the athletic department. We appreciate the part everyone played in this achievement."
APRs for all Division I teams will be released May 14. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and they also can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport, with the majority of top 10 teams earning a perfect APR.
"Each year, more and more teams are achieving perfect APR scores," said NCAA President Mark Emmert. "We are proud of our member schools' commitment to providing tremendous opportunities for student-athletes so they can succeed on the field, in the classroom, and in life."
A total of 275 Division I schools (and seven in other divisions who have a sport competing in Division I) places at least one team on the top APR list, up 19 from last year. Dartmouth College had the most teams (26 of 28) recognized, followed by Brown University (22 of 31) and Bucknell University (21 of 27).
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport.
On the court, the 2013-14 Falcons had an overall record of 10-9 and a Mid-American Conference mark of 4-4. The team's two seniors, Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland, each earned all-league honors, with Chiricosta being named the 2014 MAC Player of the Year. Both seniors have a cumulative grade-point average of higher than 3.90.
