Toledo, Ohio – Brooke Pleger closed out the outdoor track and field regular season in spectacular fashion Friday, breaking her own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 223-feet. That mark moves her into second place in the country this year.
Only one other athlete in the nation, Princeton's Julia Ratcliffe, has thrown the hammer further than 218 feet this year and Pleger broke her fourth facility record this year in the process. She now holds facility records at Cincinnati, Kentucky, Bowling Green and Toledo. In fact, the mark she broke Friday was previously held by 2004 Olympian Jackie Jeschelnig.
Pleger remains undefeated in the hammer throw this year and has not been beaten in a collegiate meet since placing seventh at the NCAA National Championships a year ago. The distance of 223-feet moves her into 10th place all-time among American collegiate hammer throwers.
A year ago, Pleger set her own personal best in the hammer with a toss of 219-feet-9 but her best throw in 2014 had been 214-4 before Friday's meet. Only 10 athletes in Division I have broken 200 feet this year and Pleger's worst meet in the past two years, a mark of 208-7, would still place her fourth in the country this year.
Although she was overshadowed by Pleger's performance, freshman sprinter Gabrielle Edwards set a pair of collegiate personal bests at the Toledo Invitational. She ran the 100 in 12.54 seconds to finish fourth and finished the 200 in 25.23 seconds to place third.
BGSU will compete next at the MAC Championships beginning Thursday at Ohio University.
