The list of individual honorees includes Nikki Chiricosta, Drew Fillis and Emily Reuland. Chiricosta and Reuland were senior co-captains on the 2013-14 Falcons, while Fillis was a sophomore this past season.
BGSU was named an ITA All-Academic Team for the seventh consecutive year, and the Falcons have had at least three players named an ITA Scholar Athlete in each of those years.
Chiricosta and Reuland each received the ITA Scholar-Athlete honor in all four of their seasons with the Falcon program, while Fillis has earned accolades in each of her first two seasons at BGSU.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2013 and spring 2014).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letterwinner, have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
Chiricosta, a native of Avon Lake, Ohio, graduated in May with a cumulative GPA of 3.97 as a communications major. She was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year in her senior season, and earned a veritable plethora of athletic and academic honors during her BGSU career. Chiricosta finished her career as the winningest player in school history.
Reuland, a co-captain along with Chiricosta in 2013-14, was an exercise science major at BGSU, and graduated in May with a cumulative GPA of 3.925. A native of Oswego, Ill., she was named to the All-MAC Second Team as a senior, and ended her career ranked in the top five in BG history on all three wins lists.
Fillis, a native of Toledo, Ohio, is an athletic training major with a cumulative GPA of 3.736 through her first two years at the University. She moved into the BGSU lineup in both singles and doubles during her sophomore campaign, and was one-half of the Falcons' top-flighted doubles team, competing with Reuland in 16 doubles matches at that number-one flight.
"The ITA wishes to congratulate all schools named to the ITA All-Academic Team and the ITA Scholar-Athletes for achieving great success both on and off the court," said David Benjamin, Executive Director of the ITA.
The Falcons concluded the 2013-14 season with an overall record of 10-9 and a MAC ledger of 4-4, in Penny Dean's final season as head coach.
