Members of the media select Bowling Green as favorites to repeat as MAC Champs
DETROIT, Mich.—Bowling Green State University has been selected to win the East Division and Marathon Mid-American Conference Championship Game in the Preseason Poll, released Wednesday morning. The poll was announced at the MAC's annual Media Day at Ford Field, and was determined by the league's media members.
The Falcons were picked as heavy favorites to win the East Division by the media, garnering 144 total points to second-place Akron's 114 points. BGSU also received 18-of-21 first place votes in the East, while the Zips picked up the other three.
The Falcons return 48 letterwinners and 16 starters from last year's 10-4 team that won the MAC Championship for the first time since 1992 and earned an invitation to the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. Bowling Green head coach Dino Babers will look towards quarterback Matt Johnson to lead the Falcons. Johnson threw for 3,467 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2013. Travis Greene will also be leaned on if the Falcons hope to repeat. A season ago, Greene rushed for 1,594 yards (school record) and 11 touchdowns.
In the West Division, Toledo was selected as the favorite with 11 first-place votes and 114 total votes.
Bowling Green was also selected by the media to repeat as Marathon MAC Championship Game Champions, picking up 11-of-21 votes to do so.
The Falcons open the season on the road when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky. for a showdown with Western Kentucky. That contest, slated for Friday, Aug. 29, is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. EST on CBS Sports Network.
