Pinehurst, N.C. – Bowling Green State University rising junior Lily Bartell of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, was invited to take part in the 112th North & South Women's Amateur Championship on July 14-19th at the Pinehurst No. 8 Golf Course at the Pinehurst Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.
"We are thrilled at the news of Lily being invited to this prestigious amateur championship. I know Lily is honored and humbled to be a part of an event with such a rich tradition and compete with such talented players," stated BGSU head women's golf coach Stephanie Young. "All of us are excited that she will be able to not only represent her family, but her BGSU family as well."
Golfers come from around the Carolinas, the East Coast, and the world to enter the North & South each year. Most of the mid-amateurs at one point dreamed of playing on the professional tour (some of them even tried it), while the younger ones still harbor those dreams. Some will make it as PGA and LPGA Tour stars, like Jack Nicklaus, Curtis Strange, Davis Love III, Corey Pavin, Babe Didrikson, Louise Suggs, Donna Andrews, and Morgan Pressel.
Entries to the prestigious annual event are only open to female amateur golfers who have a handicap index of 5.0 or less.
"It's a great honor to be invited to play in the tournament and I'm really looking forward to playing. With both the PGA and LPGA U.S. Opens being played at Pinehurst, it's a special place this year and I'm excited to represent BGSU at such a prestigious tournament," commented Bartell. "I've been working hard and preparing to compete this summer. Needless to say, I'm itching to get out there!"
The tournament will consist of three rounds of stroke play from July 15-17th, followed by four rounds of match play on July 18-20th. The 132 player field will be cut to the low 60 and ties following the second round. The final 60 players and ties will then compete for the 16 player match play field and medalist honors over the final two days of play. The top-16 players who qualify for match play will play two rounds until a champion is determined.
Eight of the last 12 North & South Women's Amateur champions are on the LPGA Tour, including Yani Tseng, who beat Morgan Pressel (the 2004 champion) in 2005 before going on to win six LPGA majors – and counting.
