Falcons Close Weekend At Bluejay Invitational

Omaha, Neb. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team lost two matches on the final day of the Bluejay Invitational Saturday, losing to host Creighton 25-17, 25-18, 25-15 and to Pepperdine 25-15, 25-14, 25-15. Kelsey Bates earned all-tournament honors for the Falcons for her performance during the weekend.

Bates had a team-high 14 blocks on the weekend, an average of 1.27 per set, and was third on the squad with 26 kills, or 2.36 per set. She added two service aces as well.

In the early afternoon match, Creighton proved why they sit just outside of the top 25, rolling to a three-set sweep of the Falcons. BGSU fell behind quickly in all three frames and were never able to rebound.

The biggest statistical difference came in attacking as the Bluejays hit .270 and Bowling Green was at just .067. Creighton also had seven aces, five more than the Falcons, but BGSU posted six blocks.

Paige O'Connor had a team-high eight kills and Madeline Garda picked up 10 digs. Bates had five blocks to go with her six kills and an ace.

Pepperdine was also able to build early leads in all three sets in the nightcap and the Waves set the tone by scoring 11 of the first 14 points of the match to find its rhythm quickly.

Nicole Slimko and O'Connor each had nine kills in the match to lead the Falcons and Alyssa Maloney added five kills and four blocks. Pepperdine hit .354 as BGSU attacked at a .140 clip.

With the losses, Bowling Green falls to 2-7 on the season. The Falcons will close out the pre-conference slate next weekend with three matches at the Oakland Invitational in Rochester, Mich.
