Bowling Green, Ohio – A total of four different Falcons scored in double figures on Wednesday night, as the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team soared over the Eagles of Eastern Michigan with a 74-58 win in a MAC cross-divisional contest at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Redshirt-senior guard Anthony Henderson led the way with a season-high 17 points, as the sharp-shooter was 6-for-12 overall and 3-for-6 from behind the three-point line in the win. Senior Richaun Holmes posted his third double-double of the season and the 11th of his career with 13 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and three assists, while sophomore Zack Denny registered his second straight double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Off the bench junior Delvin Dickerson matched his BGSU career-high with 12 points, as the forward was 5-of-9 shooting for the game.
BGSU improved to 12-4 overall with the win and are off to a 4-1 start in MAC play for the first time since 2004-05. Eastern Michigan falls to 12-6 overall and 1-4 in the MAC with the loss.
"For the most part, I'm pretty pleased with our effort this evening. We had two primary focuses - and that was to try to get to the line and make more than them; and then to win the rebounding battle as well. We felt like those were two areas that if we did a good job on we'd come out victorious," stated BGSU head coach Chris Jans. "They're a very strong, physical team and the way they zone up – they've already made 100 more free throws or close to it than their opponents because people tend to get on their heels and don't stay aggressive so they don't get to the free throw line as much – so we didn't want to fall in that trap and I was pretty pleased that we were able to accomplish that."
The Eagles were led by Tim Bond's 13 points and three blocks off the bench, while starting guard Raven Lee added 11 points on just 3-of-11 shooting for the contest.
BGSU was 25-of-55 (45.5 percent) from the floor overall on the offensive end, but was 11-of-25 (44 percent) from behind the three-point line, tying their season-high in made three-pointers in a single game this season.
The Falcons also had 17 assists on the 25 made baskets and out-rebounded EMU 39-35 for the game.
The trend of the game started with the first basket of the contest, as Henderson hit a three-pointer from the right wing to put the home team on the scoreboard first at the 18:59 mark of the opening half.
After the two teams traded three-pointers and the lead minutes later, EMU used a 7-0 run capped off by two made free throws from Bond, to fly out to a five-point lead at 12-7 with 14:25 to go in the first half.
An alley-oop pass from Jehvon Clarke to Dickerson over top of the EMU zone for a two-handed slam minutes later jump-started a 14-3 run by the Falcons who took an eight-point lead at the 8:51 mark on a layup by Henderson on the right block following an offensive rebound.
Minutes later, BGSU would get back-to-back baskets from Dickerson and two free throws from Henderson to push its lead to nine at 29-20, only to see EMU answer with four quick points from Anali Okoloji to trim the lead back to five at 29-24 with just over four minutes to go before the halftime break.
Holmes would then take matters into his own hands, scoring the next eight points of the contest, highlighted by a put back slam off a missed Falcons' shot attempt, to help the Falcons go into the halftime break with a 37-26 lead.
Just like in the first half, the Falcons opened up the second half with a three-ball, this time from Denny, and then added a mid-range jumper from Henderson two minutes later to give the Orange and Brown its largest lead of the game to that point at 42-26 with 17:24 to go in the game.
The Eagles were able to get to within 12 points at 48-36 on a layup down low from Brandon Nazione and then once more at 53-41 on a three-pointer from Lee, only to see BGSU answer with a points of their own to hold on to a 13-point lead at 54-41 at the 8:11 mark on a free throw from forward Spencer Parker.
However, the Eagles refused to quit, as another three-pointer from Lee started a 7-3 surge by the visitors in green, who cut the Falcons' lead to single digits at 57-48 with just under seven minutes to play in regulation.
The Falcons negated the Eagles spurt with a three-pointer from Henderson, a jumper from Denny, and back-to-back three-balls from Dickerson and David Joseph over the next three minutes of play to push the lead out to 21 points at 69-48 on a free throw from Denny.
BGSU would get a free throw apiece from Josh Gomez and JD Tisdale, as well as a corner three-pointer from Damarkeo Lyshe late in the contest to help seal the 74-58 home win over the Eagles.
BGSU outscored EMU 18-16 in points in the paint, 27-25 in bench points and 18-17 in second chance points in the win.
Bowling Green (12-4, 4-1 MAC) will next be in action on Saturday night, Jan. 24, as the Falcons will head north for the Battle of I-75 at Savage Arena at 7 p.m.
