Aguilo Advances To Top Flight Championship

UIC Invite Day One Results
Chicago, Ill. – Freshman Paula Comella Aguilo made her way to the top flight championship as the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team competed at the UIC Invite Friday (Oct. 2) in Chicago, Ill. The weather was definitely a challenge but the Falcons overcame adversity on day one of the invite, which began at 9:00 a.m.
Aguilo made her way to the top flight championship by defeating Osabuohien of Northern Illinois 6-1, 6-3. She then took down Valparaiso's Hebble 7-5, 6-1. Aguilo will fight for the flight title against Alvarez of NIU.
Freshman Polina Radeva also competing in the top flight won the first set against Valparaiso's Modesto, lost the second set and rallied back winning the last set 10-8 to take the match. She went on to lose to Alvarez of NIU in another trying match 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Radeva will have another go at Valparaiso's Modesto for a shot at third place.
In the flames flight sophomore Emily Witt fell to Clark of UWM 7-6(2), 6-1. She came back to defeat Valparaiso's Milanes 6-3, 6-0. Witt will take on Marshall of UVM for a crack at third place.
In the red flight junior Antonina Farrar crushed Valparaiso's Staal 6-0, 7-6(2). She lost to Mande of UIC 6-0, 6-1. Farrar will duel it out with Milwakee's Lobanova. Freshman Marina Ferrero competing for the first time this season was defeated in the first round by NIU's Montgomerie 6-2, 5-7, 10-6. She lost the first set 2-6 to Paras of Valparaiso, but came back to win the next two sets 6-2, 10-5. Ferrero will square off with Pendleton of Milwakee for a chance at third place.
Junior Leeah Floyd struggled in the first and second rounds of the blue flight but will go against Roach of Valparaiso for an additional match.
In doubles Aguilo and Fillis defeated NIU's Youel and Erasmus 6-2. The duo will battle Heuer and Hebble for a chance at the top flight championship. Radeva and Witt were defeated by Altansarnai and Hahn of UIC in the first round 6-1. They have an opportunity to compete for third place in the top flight if they defeat Modesto and Milanes of Valparaiso. Floyd and Farrar were defeated in the first round of doubles. They will go against Valparaiso's Staal and Paras in the consolation bracket.
The Falcons will start play on Saturday at 8:30 am with doubles. The "A" Flight will be played at UIC Flames Outdoor Courts and "B" Flights will be at St. Ignatius.
