Four Falcons Head To ITA Regionals
October 21, 2015 | Women's Tennis
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team will close out the fall portion of their schedule with the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the University of Michigan. The six day (Oct. 22 - 27) event features 24 teams and some of the top women's players across the country.
"The competition this weekend is the best the girls will see all year. All of the schools in our region are taking their top players, so it's going to be a very competitive tournament," Head Coach Olga Elkin said. "I am really excited to watch the girls play, compete and gain valuable experience that they can take into the spring season."
The Falcons have four members of the team traveling to regionals in senior Drew Fillis, sophomore Emily Witt and freshmen Polina Radeva and Paula Comella Aguilo.
For singles the first round qualifying matches will begin Thursday at 8 am with the second round to follow at 12:30 pm. Witt, Radeva and Aguilo will all be competing in singles play for Bowling Green.
So far in the fall, Aguilo and Radeva have led singles for the Falcons, each with an 8-2 record. Both have earned top flight championship titles this season. Aguilo, claiming her title at the UIC Invite two weeks ago, won the championship by with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 come-from-behind victory. Radeva posted a similar outcome at the beginning of the fall at the CSU Invite. She rallied from a first set defeat of 3-6 in the top flight championship match to win the last two sets 7-6 (3), 6-4.
Also in singles play is Witt, who won just three matches a year ago. She is already 5-4 this year and has competed in two flight championships at the CSU Invite and BGSU Invite.
The first round for main draw doubles will not take place until Friday afternoon. Radeva and Witt will be one of the two duos, with Fillis and Aguilo being the other.
The combination of Fillis and Aguilo improved their record to 7-1 after clinching the doubles flight championship title at the UIC invite. They went undefeated at an invitational tournament for the second time this season. Witt and Radeva have tallied six victories this fall with only three losses, one of those losses being an opportunity for a flight championship title.
