Lewis Named Semifinalist For Biletnikoff Award
November 17, 2015 | Football
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee, comprised of 320 distinguished voters, announced this morning that sophomore wide receiver Roger Lewis, a member of the Bowling Green State University football team, was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award. The award is presented to the season's most outstanding receiver in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Lewis has hauled in 69 receptions this season for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Pickerington, Ohio native ranks second in the nation in receiving yards, currently sitting just 17 yards behind TCU's Josh Doctson, while his 14 touchdown catches rank tied for second in the country.
The sophomore is averaging 131.0 yards per game and 7.1 receptions per game. The numbers rank third and tied for 13th in the nation, respectively. Lewis has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of the Week two separate times this season for his efforts against Memphis on Sept. 19 and Buffalo on Oct. 3. Lewis registered 200-yard performances in both games.
In Bowling Green's home opener against Memphis, Lewis caught seven passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns, while recording 10 receptions for 201 yards and a score at Buffalo. The sophomore also had a 200-yard performance in BGSU's win at Maryland on Sept. 12, when he hauled in 15 receptions for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Lewis is the only player in school history to have three 200-yard games in a career. Remarkably, it took him only five games in 2015 to accomplish the feat.
Across his career, Lewis has had at least 100 yards receiving 13 times. Seven of those performances have taken place this season, including a stretch where he had 100 yards receiving in five-straight games.
To go along with the video-game numbers, Lewis has had several highlight-real catches this season, including a pair in the Falcons' 48-0 win on Oct. 24 at Kent State. Both of his touchdown catches in the game appeared on SportsCenter's #SCTop10 during the evening broadcast.
Building on an impressive 2014 season that saw Lewis become the only freshman in school history to surpass 1,000 yards receiving, it took the sophomore just eight games in 2015 to pass his impressive total of 1,093 yards that he racked up in 2014.
During that 2014 season, Lewis caught a game-winning touchdown pass against Indiana with nine seconds left, which gave BGSU its first win against a Big Ten Conference opponent at home in program history. And to secure Bowling Green's first bowl-game win since 2004, Lewis hauled in a 78-yard touchdown pass with 1:04 left in regulation to give BGSU a 33-28 win over South Alabama in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl.
On Nov. 24, the committee will narrow the 10 semifinalists down to three finalists. The winner of the Biletnikoff Award will be announced on Dec. 10 as a part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
