Friedman, Tibbs Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
November 30, 2015 | General, Ice Hockey, Women's Basketball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Mark Friedman and women's basketball player Lauren Tibbs.
Male Athlete of the Week
Mark Friedman, a sophomore from Toronto, Ontario, scored a goal in each of Bowling Green's wins over Northern Michigan, extending his point scoring streak to five games, and anchored a penalty kill unit that was perfect on the weekend. Friedman entered the weekend with just two career goals but scored on the power play just 2:24 into the first period Friday night, sparking the Falcons to a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats. In Saturday's 4-3 overtime win, he scored a goal that put Bowling Green ahead 2-1 early in the second and then had the only assist on Mitch McLain's shorthanded goal with 5.3 seconds remaining in overtime. He was the star of a defensive effort that held Northern Michigan to just 10 shots on goal Friday and 23 more Saturday (including six in overtime), as well as blanking the Wildcats on five power play opportunities for the weekend. Friedman tied for team-high honors with three blocked shots on the weekend and was +3 on-ice over the two games, generating four shots on goal.
Female Athlete of the Week
Lauren Tibbs, a senior from Taylor Mill, Ky., led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding for the second straight week as BGSU split a pair of games at the UNCW Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic. Tibbs averaged 13.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, and shot better than 70 percent from the field in the Falcons' two games. Tibbs had 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting in a narrow 60-56 loss to Davidson. Then, she went 6-of-8 from the field en route to 14 points, and had a double-double with 10 rebounds, vs. Jacksonville. Tibbs also had a pair of assists vs. JU, and scored back-to-back BG baskets in overtime to help the Falcons to a 72-69 win.
