BGSU Student-Athletes Graduating At Elite Levels
November 05, 2015 | General
Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA released the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for each Division I athletic program yesterday and Bowling Green remains ahead of the curve nationally and within the Mid-American Conference. BGSU's 85 percent GSR rate was second among all MAC schools and 12 of the 18 varsity intercollegiate athletics teams had a GSR that ranked among the top half of the league in their respective sport.
Seven of Bowling Green's teams have a perfect 100 percent GSR, up from five a year ago (and four the year before that) and another three are at least at 90 percent. Men's cross country, men's golf, hockey, women's golf, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball all ranked with a perfect graduation success rate, while women's soccer (96 percent), women's basketball (93 percent) and gymnastics (92 percent) all posted exemplary marks.
"BGSU's latest Graduation Success Rate marks are a testament to our student-athletes, who value the importance of degree completion," Lauren Ashman, Senior Associate Athletics Director, said. "These results reflect our institution's continued goal of preparing students for academic success and lifelong career preparation. We are proud to serve as a leader, both within the Mid-American Conference and across the national landscape.
The largest one-year increase within the department came in men's basketball as the team improved to 73 percent (up from 56 percent in 2014-15). Men's golf had an 11 percent increase and swimming and diving had a six percent improvement, both moving to perfect scores.
Four teams were at least 10 percent ahead of the national graduation success rate for their sport, with men's cross country posting a perfect mark, well ahead of the national average of 79 percent. Both the men's and women's golf teams were 16 percent ahead of the 84 percent national GSR for their sports and hockey was 13 percent ahead of the 87 percent national GSR.
Twelve of Bowling Green's 18 teams ranked in the top half of the conference in their respective sport and seven ranked first among league schools.
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the success of Division I student-athletes and it takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.
The GSR data released by the NCAA today is based on the four entering freshmen classes in Division I from 2005-06 through 2008-09 and measures graduation within a six-year time frame.
