Detroit, Mich. – Detroit native Spencer Parker led the Falcons with a career-high 33 points and 11 rebounds, however, Bowling Green couldn't slow down the hot-shooting Detroit Titans who hit 13 three-pointers in a 95-80 home win over the Orange and Brown on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall in Detroit, Mich.
BGSU's winning streak was snapped at six games with the loss, as the Falcons fall to 7-3 overall on the season. Detroit has now won three games in a row, is 5-0 at home this season and is now 5-3 overall on the year.
Despite shooting 53.6 percent in the second half, including going 6-of-8 from behind the three-point line, the Falcons couldn't wrestle the lead away from the Titans who were 32-of-68 (47.1 percent) from the field overall and 13-of-30 (43.3 percent) from long range over the 40 minute contest.
The Falcons finished the game 26-of-59 (44.1 percent) offensively.
BGSU got to the free throw line 35 times, but shot just 60 percent overall with 21 makes. Detroit was 18-of-26 (69.2 percent) from the charity stripe for the game.
Behind Parker's third double-double of the season was Rasheed Worrell with 16 points, a new career-high, and four rebounds, while Wes Alcegaire added nine points and five rebounds. Off the bench, Antwon Lillard finished with nine points, four rebounds and two steals.
The Titans had four players with double digit points led by Paris Bass' game-high 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Bass, in his first game of the season after missing the first seven games due to a suspension, also had eight rebounds and three assists. Jaleel Hogan posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while guards Antwon Wilson and Carlton Brundidge finished with 17 and 12 points apiece, respectively.
Detroit opened the game up with a dunk from Hogan and a jumper from Bass to take a 4-0 point lead off of the opening tip, before the Falcons scored five straight points on two free throws from Alcegaire and a three-ball from Zack Denny to put the visitors in front at 5-4 just over two minutes into the contest.
After another Bass bucket and a layup down low from the Falcons' Worrell, BGSU found itself in front at 7-6 at the 17:04 mark of the first half.
That would be the last lead of the game for the visitors in orange, as Wilson knocked down the first of 13 Detroit three-pointers to give the home team back the lead at 9-7.
The three-ball kicked-off a 25-4 run by the Titans, as the Falcons struggled offensively picking up a free throw from Parker, a driving two-handed dunk from JD Tisdale and another free throw from Alcegiare over the six minute stretch.
Another three-pointer, Detroit's six during that span, capped off the Titans' run to give the home team a 17-point lead at 28-11 with 10:05 to go in the first half of play.
Back-to-back baskets by Parker jump-started a 10-0 run for the Falcons, as BGSU closed the gap to seven at 28-21 on two more free throws from Parker with 7:39 left before the halftime break.
The Falcons cut the Detroit lead as low as eight at 38-30, only to see the Titans get hot again offensively and outscore BGSU 9-4 over the final 3:15 of the first half to take a 47-34 lead into the halftime intermission.
Bowling Green got a free throw from David Joseph and a lay in bucket down low from Worrell early in the second half, yet the Titans continued their sharp-shooting to score six straight points and push its lead out to 18 points at 55-37 with 17:22 to go in regulation.
The game of runs continued with seven straight points from BGSU, highlighted by a fast break dunk from Lillard to put the score at 55-42, only to see Detroit answer with four straight points of its own to pull back out in front by 17 at 59-42.
BGSU continued to inch its way back into the game, chipping away at the Detroit lead over the next several minutes of play when a three-pointer from Denny, followed by a Titans' foul shot and an Alcegaire trey put the Falcons down just seven at 65-58 with 9:24 left on the game clock.
A strong two-handed flush by Worrell and an old-fashion three-point play from Parker put the Orange and Brown within one basket at 65-63 with 8:35 to go in the contest.
However, a Bass three-pointer from the top of the key on the next Detroit possession gave the home team breathing room once again, putting the score at 68-63.
BGSU got to within six at 70-64 on a Lillard free throw, 73-67 on a Parker three-pointer and again at 76-70 on an Alcegaire trey, yet couldn't get a series of stops on the defensive end to cut into the Detroit lead.
Down the stretch, the Titans were able to get two three-pointers from Brundidge and free throws from Hogan to help the home team pull away for the double digit win over the Falcons.
The Falcons outscored Detroit 36-34 in points in the paint, 13-12 in points off turnovers and 18-11 in fast break points. However, the Titans outscored BGSU 14-10 in second chance points and 31-15 in bench points.
Both teams had 16 assists, while Detroit out-rebounded BGSU 41-37.
Bowling Green (7-3) will continue its tour through the Horizon League with a road contest next Sunday, Dec. 20, at Wright State in Dayton, Ohio. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
