Awards Presented By The Touchdown Club of Columbus
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two Bowling Green State University football standouts were the recipients of a pair of National Awards, as announced by The Touchdown Club of Columbus on Wednesday. Matt Johnson is the winner of the prestigious Sammy Baugh Award, presented to college football's top passer, while Roger Lewis has been named as the winner of the Paul Warfield Award, presented annually to college football's top receiver.
Johnson, a native of Harrisburg, Pa., is the first Falcon since Brian McClure in 1985 to earn the Baugh Award. The award, which was first presented in 1959, has been held by legendary quarterbacks such as Steve Young, John Elway, and Bob Greiese. Johnson passed for a school-record 4,465 yards. He enters Friday's MAC Championship Game just 22 yards shy of becoming the single-season passing leader in Mid-American Conference history. His 41 passing touchdowns – and 45 total – are tied with Omar Jacobs for the school and MAC single-season record. Johnson leads the Football Bowl Subdivision in passing yards and points responsible for, while he is second in passing touchdowns.
Lewis, a native of Pickerington, Ohio, teams up with Johnson to become the first passing/receiving combination in TDC history to win both major awards. The award, named for Pro Football Hall of Famer Paul Warfield is earned by a Falcon player for the first time in school history. Lewis has 1,401 receiving yards to date, second-most in the country entering Friday's MAC Championship Game. He has caught 14 touchdowns this season – tied for third-most in school history for a single season. In just two short seasons, Lewis already ranks fifth in school history with 2,494 career receiving yards.
Both the Baugh and Warfield Trophies will be presented at the 61 st Touchdown Club of Columbus Awards scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Sheraton Capitol Square in Downtown Columbus.
