Bowling Green, Ohio – Coming off a 2014 fall season that saw the Falcons post two third-place team finishes and two fourth-place team showings over their five events, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team will enter the 2015 spring season with both confidence and excitement. Plus the Falcons will host three different events this spring, including the 2015 MAC Women's Golf Championships in late April.
"I think we had a solid fall and we won't forget that, but that was several months ago and we must realize it's almost like starting a new season. We have to commit to being our best both individually and collectively as a group every single day," commented head coach Stephanie Young. "We must take it one round at a time and stay focused on the process. There are many opportunities for us to be successful this spring."
The senior duo of Shelby Wilson and Patricia Holt have both been key parts in the Falcons growth over the last few years and will look to close out their BGSU careers with a great spring season.
Wilson, who paced the Falcons this past fall with a team-best stroke average of 77.36 over 11 rounds of play, posted three top-10 finishes over the fall season, including fourth-place finishes at both the Golden Grizzlies Invitational and the rain-shortened Bearcat Classic.
Not to be outdone, Holt carded a stroke average of 78.45 over her 11 rounds of play and registered three top-15 finishes, which included a seventh-place individual showing at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational.
Both Wilson and Holt have helped to rewrite the BGSU career record books and both are ranked in the top-10 in career scoring average and season average.
"The seniors, Patricia and Shelby, have made such an impact on BGSU Women's Golf and BGSU over their careers so far. I believe there is still much more for them to write in their career stories," continued Coach Young. "All of us want to work together to make it happen."
The Falcons will also look to count on juniors Hannah Lewis and Lily Bartell who both played in all five events for the Falcons this past fall. Lewis carded a BGSU low round 72 at both the Cardinal Classic and the Golden Grizzlies en route to a 78.91 stroke average over 11 rounds of play, while Bartell totaled two top-25 finishes, including a 12th-place finish at the Rocket Classic.
Sophomores Mikayla Baer and Fran Rodriguez will head into their second spring season at BGSU with a full year of experience, as both played nine rounds of golf for the Falcons over the fall season. Baer turned in a stroke average of 79.00 for the fall season, while Rodriguez was right on her heels with an average of 79.22. The duo combined to post seven top-25 finishes last fall.
Juniors Lauren Diehl and Julia Hoffman, as well as freshmen Madelynn Swank and Miranda Dubler, will all look to continue the Falcons strong play this spring as all four played in at least two events for Coach Young and BGSU this past fall.
"We have been working hard since our players came back from winter break. The focus has been on our short game and competitive situations. Everyone is looking forward to opening up competition and hosting the first event in just a week."
The Falcons will tee-off its 2015 spring slate on Feb. 9-10 at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge hosted by BGSU at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Lakewood, Fla.
