Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced today the Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the seven fall sports during this 2014-15 academic season as 194 student-athletes were voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions representing the 'best of the best' from each sports Academic All-MAC Teams.
23 student-athletes from Bowling Green State University were named Distinguished Scholar Athletes, including at least one from all of the Falcons' six fall sports. BGSU's 23 Distinguished Scholar Athletes was five more than any other Mid-American Conference institution.
Three Falcon athletic teams led the MAC among the Distinguished Scholar Athlete award for their respective sports. The women's cross country program had four student-athletes earn the award, most in the conference. The six student-athletes from the men's soccer program and seven from the football program represented the top number in the MAC for the respective fall sport, as well.
The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a first-year award given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the fall sports schedule, any student-athlete with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the 'best of the best' of our Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award for the 2014-15 season. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever was greater.
Later this spring, the MAC will announce the Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the remaining 16 winter and spring sports sponsored by the Conference.
