Falcons Win 9 Events, Finish Dual Meet Schedule With A Win

Youngstown, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swim and dive team concluded its 2014-15 dual meet schedule Friday evening, with a decisive 177-122 victory over Youngstown State. With the win, the Falcons finish at 9-1 on the season in dual meets, its only loss coming last weekend against Buffalo.
BGSU won nine out of a possible 16 events, with seven different Falcons contributing to the victories. In fact, four of the nine wins were sweeps of the first three spots in the events won.
"It was great to get one more travel meet under our belt before MAC Championships and get a chance to shrapen our racing skills some more," said head coach Petra Martin. "Now we have two weeks ahead of us of some uninterrupted and championships-focused preparation and then it's show time."
Franziska Wohlert and Daniela Carrillo each won two individual events and also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team, along with Kayla Effinger and Anna Babinec. Wohlert placed first in the 100 backstroke, as well as the 200 backstroke. In the 200 back, Maya Skorupski and Erica Nieminen placed second and third, respectively. Nieminen's time of 2:10.55 was her fastest of the season in the event.
Carrillo's first individual victory came in the 100 breaststroke, where she was followed by Carmen Young and Stephanie Boyle in second and third. Her second was in the 200 breaststroke, and this time second and third place were taken by Kristin Filby and Boyle.
Along with her contribution to the 200 medley relay win, Effinger earned her first victory of the season in the 50 freestyle. Sadie Ahlers finished in second with a time of 24.63.
Three Falcon swimmers each won one individual event in the final dual meet of the season. Jordan Bullock won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.16. Estela Davis placed first in the 100 butterfly, swimming the event for the first time this season. Victoria Griffin's win came in the 200 individual medley, which was also her first time swimming the event this season. Bullock and Filby placed second and third, respectively behind Griffin.
"I'm proud of the team and the regular season we had and we are looking to take all our focus, hard work and team drive to the MAC Championships and be Falcon Fast!" said Martin.
The Orange and Brown have two and a half weeks off until the start of the Mid-American Conference Championships at Eastern Michigan University Feb. 25-28.
